Black Monday for NFL Coaches

#1 Post by silverscreenselect » Mon Jan 05, 2026 12:01 am

It's the day after the NFL regular season ends, which means that it's time to pass out pink slips to NFL coaches and/or general managers. For those with short memories, the Tennessee Titans (Brian Callahan) and New York Giants (Brian Daboll) got the ball rolling early with mid-season firings this year. The Giants and Titans won a combined seven games this season.

However, the official start of Black Monday came a few hours early, when the Atlanta Falcons fired head coach Raheem Morris and GM Terry Fontenot.

And Black Tuesday became Black Thursday when the Dolphins fired Mike McDaniel, the eighth coach canned since the start of the NFL season.

Not a firing but a resignation. Mike Tomlin has resigned as head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers, bringing the current number of vacancies up to nine.

One statistic I've always found amazing is that the Steelers have only had three head coaches since 1969. Some NFL teams go through three head coaches in a single season. I guess they'll soon have number four and it won't be quite so amazing.

He and Chuck Noll will remain tied for the most coaching wins in Steelers' history with 193.

The Giants have hired John Harbaugh. This is the best pro football news I've heard in a decade.

An old saying comes to mind involving the application of lip makeup and a certain swine.
