An old Bored post reminded me of this episode of All in the Family. (Another guest star was Phil Carey of One Life to Live).

I remember this episode and that Phil Carey was in it. Mrs. SSS and I watched OLTL every night on tape since a couple of years into our marriage until the show went off the air. When we'd go on vacation, we'd set up the VCR to tape every day we were gone and then binge watch (the term didn't exist then) when we got back.

I didn't realize it was Geary in that episode until you pointed it out. Geary played a friend of Mike's (Rob Reiner) and at the same time Archie ran into his old army buddy Phil Carey. Based on Geary's appearance, Archie was sure he was gay and used various swishy mannerisms to describe him. It turned out that Geary was straight and the macho Carey was gay, which Archie couldn't believe at first.

A bit of Rob Reiner trivia. Reiner hosted the third episode of Saturday Night Live, and was the first host to appear in the sketches with the regular cast. This was one of the few episodes without a musical guest (they were still trying to figure out the best format for the show back then). Reiner's then-wife, Penny Marshall, appeared in a sketch with him.
