Scorigami! 9/28/2025

#1 Post by BackInTex » Wed Oct 01, 2025 10:12 am

The Greenbay Packers vs the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday NIght, in prime time, resulted in a 40-40 tie and a SCORIGAMI!

Ties are rare (first since Dec 2022), but a tie where both teams scored 40 points has never happened before.

Also of note for this game, the Cowboys returned a blocked extra point attempt to score 2 points for themselves.

If I'm going to lose 10 points, my preference would be for everyone else to lose the points, as well. :D :D :D

I guess at some point since the ancient days when I quit watching football they changed overtime periods to just 10 minutes. I looked up the box score of that game and was trying to figure out how Green Bay kicked a field goal as time expired and it didn't end the game. I did know that a FG on first possession was no longer good enough for sudden death, but was surprised to see each team got just one possession in OT...

Play until there's a winner, wussies!!!

Actually, I believe, had there been time left after Green Bays' field goal, Dallas would have received a kick off had had another possesion.

I agree. No OT clock.

Team A Possession 1 = TD, team A wins

Team A Possession 1 = FG, Team B gets ball. Team B Possession 1 no score. Team A wins.

Team A Possession 1 = FG, Team B gets ball. Team B Possession 1 scores TD, Team B wins

Team A Possession 1 = FG, Team B gets ball. Team B Possession 1 scores FG, sudden death kick in with Team B kicking off to Team A and they play until someone scores.

Team A Possession 1 no score, Team B gets ball. Team B Possession 1 scores, Team B wins.

Team A Possession 1 no score, Team B get ball. Team B Possession 1 no score, sudden death kicks in. First team to score wins.

That was the second highest scoring tie in NFL history. The Oakland Raiders and (then) Boston Patriots played to a 43-43 tie in 1964. (After the AFL/NFL merger, AFL statistics and records were accepted as official NFL records.)

Another Scorigami yesterday when Houston beat Jacksonville 36-29. This one is a bit unusual. Houston scored with 31 seconds left to take a 30-29 lead. After the kickoff, the Jacksonville quarterback was sacked and fumbled, and Houston ran it back for a touchdown as time expired. Under NFL rules, Houston had the option to attempt the extra point but declined to do so, so the game ended 36-29, a scorigami. If Houston had kicked the extra point, it wouldn't have been a scorigami, since a 37-29 score had happened four times.

This is the third scorigami this season, following Buffalo's 41-40 win over Baltimore and the 40-40 tie between Green Bay and Dallas.

For those that don't know the full story of this game, Houston went into the fourth quarter losing 10-29. During the fourth quarter they scored 26 unanswered points to win the game. I took a picture of the stands after they scored the go ahead touchdown (on my TV). I wish I could post it here, but it showed only about 35% of the seats still occupied. That means 65% of the "fans" left the game early and missed the comeback.

In other photos, it looks like some of those seats were empty for the whole game.

ESPN reported attendance was 70,531. Capacity is 72,220. I don't know when the photo you posted was taken, but I doubt the stands were that empty at kickoff, especially those seats (middle level).

Doesn't the NFL consider official attendance to be tickets sold, like MLB? No shows would still count in the attendance totals...

Maybe. That's a stupid name for the metric then. "Attendance" means attended. Not intended (to attend).

Agreed. But it's all about money, and no shows are still money.

I know in MLB (the NL, at least), official attendance was changed from turnstile count to ticket count for the 1993 season. It's why even teams like the A's, Expos and Marlins were never able to break attendance lows this millennium because their season ticket count is already baked in to every game's official attendance...

The Bills beat the Buccaneers 44-32 to achieve a new scorigami.

I also noticed what I think is an interesting fact (YMMV) on the scorigami chart. On November 25, 1923, The Racine Legion beat thee Chicago Cardinals 10-4. That is the only time in NFL history that a team finished a game with 4 points.

I was watching some of that game, and they mentioned former Bills coach Marv Levy. I thought, "He must be dead by now," and I looked him up. It turns out he is now 100 and still with us. Glad I checked.
