Lyrically Speaking 10-20-25

#1 Post by elwoodblues » Sun Oct 19, 2025 8:51 pm

We begin Week 2, and I hope everyone is enjoying it.

I am retired now, but I got this idea when I was working nights as a security guard. The quoted lyrics mention a time of day when I was at work.

1. When the street lights flicker bringing on the night
Well they'll be slipping into darkness slipping out of sight
All through the midnight
Watch 'em come and watch 'em go

2. A thumb goes up, a car goes by
It's nearly one AM and here am I

3. It's 2 a.m., the fear has gone
I'm sitting here waiting, the gun's still warm

4. It's a quarter to three, there's no one in the place except you and me
So, set 'em up, Joe, I got a little story I think you should know

5. I go to parties, sometimes until four
It's hard to leave when you can't find the door

6. It's four o'clock in the morning
Damn it listen to me good
I'm sleeping with myself tonight
Saved in time
Thank God my music is still alive

7. Well, it's five o'clock in the mornin'
Feel just like the end of a mule
Somebody's been yawnin'
Tryin' to break out the rules

8. Oh, I could hide 'neath the wings of the bluebird as she sings
The six o'clock alarm would never ring

Bonus: What is the Chicago song 25 Or 6 To 4 about?

4 1/2 minutes long .... not sure how close will be considered correct, "about" is sort of ambiguous

..what country can preserve it’s liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? let them take arms.

Three was a similar game back in 2009, hosted by Bill Haley:

So, set 'em up, Joe, I got a little story I think you should know

One for My Baby (And One More for the Road) - Frank Sinatra

Last Sinatra song, I promise.

5. I go to parties, sometimes until four
It's hard to leave when you can't find the door

Some people like to sing, "It's hard to leave when you can't find some more."

Daydream Believer - Monkees

Bonus: What is the Chicago song 25 Or 6 To 4 about?

It is about staying up late at night trying to write a song. The title means 25 or 26 minutes before 4AM.

Vandal came closest to the real answer and got three points. But I gave one point for each of the following:

LB for writing a song while stoned because that's what musicians do.
Melly for writer's block.
BiT for 4 1/2 minutes long because the album version is 4:50 and that's close enough.
Hottie for LSD and Frank for drugs because yeah, probably.

LB got 2 points for the picture of my Bored character that he did for the rules thread for his LSWE game in 2014. There is a link to that thread in his answer, and you should check it out. And also for the Krox answer that was better than the song I used for that time.

Bob got a point for joining the game because I finally used a song he knows.

Vandal got a point for the link to an LS game similar to this one from 2009.

I'm impressed I even got a part of it right. My wild ass guessing has been pretty good in this game so far, which is the only explanation for why I can be leading (and was spot on again in today's game, though I botched one of the authors). I promise I am not using a trash can...
