The Mecca 100

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Wed Oct 15, 2025 3:51 pm

If you've played my LSWE games before, you've undoubtedly heard me mention about songs that have been "Mecca earworms"... songs I hear time and time again on the overhead radio at work at night. Well, I finally decided to do what I've wanted to for a while now and compile as many TRUE Mecca songs as I can and came up with a countdown of my very favorite songs I was introduced to, and likely never would have ever come into contact with, if it weren't for them being played on the store radio. While this is something I might normally reserve for posting on my Evil Squirrel's Nest blog, I've already featured quite a few of these over there as my Monday earworms over the past 11+ years... and since there was a time when there was a lot of crossover between what I was hearing at work and The Boneys, I thought those who enjoyed and missed TBone's yearly lists might find this to be somewhat interesting. And even if nobody ends up caring, it's still something I want to get out there...

The songs are an eclectic mix spanning almost the entire rock and roll era. The earliest song in this countdown is from 1960, and there are a few entries from this very decade here. The vast majority of it will be indie pop and indie rock from the first two decades of the new millennium, but there will be a lot of other surprises along the way.... country, hip hop, Kids Bop fodder, obscure 80's Brit hits, some interesting novelties.... if nothing else, I will do my best to make the write-ups on each song as informative and entertaining as possible even if you wouldn't want to press play on the YouTube videos.

I figured on posting new material once a week on Wednesdays, which is probably my free-est time right now. I wanted to start this week, but had to deal with a lot of drama yesterday, so I'll post the first edition next Wednesday. I'll break the lower half of the countdown into blocks of five songs (ten weeks), the next 30 songs into blocks of three (ten weeks), 11-20 into pairs (5 weeks), and the Top 10 individually (10 weeks). I will add links into the posts for navigation as they get posted, but don't want to thread the whole thing together because having bunches of YouTube embeddings in one thread really slows down load time.

So.... enjoy! Or not!

I always loved the Boneys. I'm looking forward to it.
