I saw the trailer the other day and at first was dubious. But in remembering that Leslie Nielsen was seen mostly as a serious actor playing mostly heavies before Airplane, I'm willing to give the benefit of a doubt.

Probably helped that I don't remember seeing Leslie Nielsen in anything serious; Liam, on the other hand...

Nielsen and much of the rest of the Airplane! cast were all dramatic actors who were given an absurd script and told to play it deadpan straight. That was done intentionally by the movie's makers, and wound up being comic genius... and is the same formula the Police Squad/Naked Gun franchise followed.

Nielsen wound up being exceptionally good at this brand of humor. Who knows how Liam will do...

My grandfather took me to see one of his movies when I was a small kid, maybe five or so; It literally scared the piss out of me. Forbidden Planet.

Nielsen often played heavies in his early career, because his stern looks and cold demeanor made him a natural. Two exceptions were The Poseidon Adventure, where he played the ship's captain (he didn't last long), and Tammy and the Bachelor (he was the bachelor opposite Debbie Reynolds).
