I've gotta say, that after starting off 0-5 and falling at one point to 11 games under .500, I really didn't dream that the Mets would enter the All-Star break in undisputed possession of a playoff spot. Yet here we are.

I've seen enough Mets collapses over the years not to count my chickens before I get to post the clinching notice, but it's an unexpected pleasure that, at least for now, I've got a rooting interest in a team with at least a fighting chance of playing in October. --Bob

The Astros started out 0-4 eventually getting 12 games under .500 on May 8th and were 10 games behind Seattle on June 16th.

Last night they beat the Mariners to be even on games and in first place based on percentage: .526 to .525 (Seattle has played two more games).

I was of course hoping to get to this position by the All-Star break but both Houston and Seattle loth their final two games prior to the break. But, I'll take where we are now. It's a brand new season.

Two more games with Seattle this weekend, so stay tuned.

The 1962 Mets, the bellwether for ineptitude, lost their 82nd in game 111 on August 7.

The 1962 Mets, the bellwether for ineptitude, lost their 82nd in game 111 on August 7.

The 2003 Tigers, who needed to finish 5-1 to "only" lose 119 games, were 29-80 through 109 games, and also lost their 82nd in Game #111 (but a day earlier on August 6th).

They have 11 games left, and must go 7-4 or better to avoid tying the Mets record for losses in a season. Their remaining schedule: 2 at the Angels, 3 at San Diego, 3 home against the Angels, and they finish with 3 at Detroit.

The Padres would love to try and knock the Dodgers off their pedestal, and anything short of a sweep for them is going to be a disappointment. And Detroit is suddenly right in the thick of the wildcard race. That could change by next week, but I seriously doubt the Sox win more than one of those six games combined. And I also doubt they do better than break even in their six games against Anaheim (funny how they were the last pair of intraleague teams to meet up this season). I'm not even sure they can count on weather canceling any games (which would cut back on their loss total) since the weather in the Midwest has been kinda dead the last month or so. 122 is the over/under for losses...

I’m sure this is controversial but I would like to see a change in the ERA scoring. I think relief pitchers should get some penalty for allowing inherited base runners to score.

Putting someone on base is only half the failure of allowing a run.

It is already a stat, just not very popular:

Inherited Runs Allowed Percentage (IR-A%)

Definition

IR-A% denotes the percentage of inherited runners who come around to score against a relief pitcher. It is determined by dividing the inherited runs scored against a pitcher by the total number of runners he has inherited. This statistic essentially asks the question: How often does a relief pitcher allow a runner (or multiple runners) to score when he enters the game with a runner (or multiple runners) on base?

Any baserunners allowed by a relief pitcher do not factor into his eventual IR-A percentage. Therefore, IR-A percentage has no bearing on a reliever's ERA.

ERA is so 20th Century.

FIP (Fielding Independent Pitching) is the new ERA used for determining a pitcher's "true talent," and will be quoted somewhere in every Cy Young discussion from now until..... well, they come up with something else. FIP is heavily strikeout based, which is why every fourth pitcher is blowing out his arm these days...

They then returned home this week for their final homestand of the season. Undoubtedly, many in attendance wanted to see the Sox make history, but the home team disappointed them by sweeping the Los Angeles Angels (who had won two of three from the Sox during the earlier road trip). But on the road in Detroit against the playoff-bound Tigers, they resorted to form. For the Tigers, the win clinched a playoff berth (Bob #####'s toaster is running a little slow today.) The Sox finish their season with two more games in Detroit this weekend.

The White Sox won their last two games of the season against the disinterested Tigers, to finish with a 41-121 record that included winning five of their last six games. Their winning percentage of .253 for the season was slightly better than the 1962 Mets, who finished 40-120 at .250. (The 1962 Mets had two games rained out that were never replayed.) Neither the Mets nor the White Sox hold the record for worst winning percentage in a season in the modern (World Series) era. That mark is held by the 1916 Philadephia A's, who finished 36-117 for a .235 percentage. The 1935 Boston Braves hold the National League mark at 38-115 for .248.
