Pronunciation Curiosity

#1 Post by kroxquo » Thu Jul 25, 2024 6:49 pm

One of the first hings I do at the beginning of the school year is learn how to spell and pronounce my students' names as a show of respect to them. So I find it interesting that Trump, Vance, and other prominent Repubs. are now talking about Kah-MAH-la and not using her preferred pronunciation COM-uh-la. I can't help but think but this is a way of subtly but deliberately disrespecting her.

OR! People simply have slightly different inflections/accents. Are people on the Left who mispronounce her name also deliberately disrespecting? just righties?

I think it's a non issue. Sorta like people saying our last name Coburn instead of Cogburn.
No. One. Fucking. Cares.

When Trump does it deliberately over and over, it's a deliberate slur, especially when he draws out the middle syllable: Ka-mahhhhl-a. It's also one that's backfiring on him.

I agree that no one cares, Rooster. (Sorry, couldn’t resist.)

But, to answer Krox’s question, with respect to Trump, it’s definitely a deliberate effort to be disrespectful. No accidental error involved.

Same with just about any other thing that’s going to be said by a political opponent.

“Barry” [I won’t even mention his middle name] Obama can attest to the disrespectful aspect of the name stuff.

No big deal.

Not sure if this is pronunciation or something else…

Do people who say Democrat Party also say Republic Party? Are there too many syllables?

To make it easier, maybe we could use Blue and Red - although those came to be from a pollster’s map! There is already a Green Party.
