Emma and Maddie both had classmates who were from a family of seven boys.
All of the boys looked alike and has names that started with J-O. It's not so bad if you are the first child and you name is John. Or the second and your name is Joseph. By the time that the latter children were born, they were using names like Josiah and Joash. The youngest son used to wander around the neighborhood. The janitor caught him once, when he was about 3, pooping behind a tree.
The mom always got upset because everyone thought that they were Mormons. They were religious, but they weren't Mormons.
She ended up having to get a hysterectomy because things were falling out and she had incontinence issues. The family moved away and is living in Idaho.

I've watched some of the specials on this family. I was somewhat disturbed. They both say "We'll keep having children as long as God will give them to us." Um, sweetheart, that's not "God" in those britches. The other thing that bothers me is the extent to which the older children are expected to look after the younger ones. They are taking on the parenting role for the younger children without having made the choice to birth those younger children. It disturbs me. Your mileage may vary.

There is a fine line to walk and I think they probably think they know what side of the line they are on, but maybe they don't. On the way to their goal, they probably do teach their children selflessness and service and the lesson may go on for too long.
I can't imagine how the household could function if the older ones did not take care of the younger ones.

It wouldn't. I'm not saying they shouldn't be expected to help out, not by any means. But from what I've seen on the shows, IMO, they (the older kids) are expected to take on far too 'parental' a role. To be fair, the kids don't seem to mind. However, seeing how busy they are kept, and the fact that they are home-schooled, one wonders if they even realize there are other ways of doing things. Each daughter I've seen them ask has stated they want to be just like their mom when they grow up, and have lots and lots of babies. I will say they do seem a happy bunch. I watched a marathon of Jon and Kate Plus Eight over the winter. I was struck by how Kate was with the kids. Although she is a bit too anal (even for my taste), she spends so much time thinking of activities to do with the kids. Her life is being a mom and she never seems to be a victim of that role. She has no help - she does have one lady who comes and folds laundry every week - that is it.
I have learned so much about me from watching her.

She's very anal, but most of it is necessary, I think. The interplay between her and her hub is funny, except sometimes I think she's really disrespectful of him. He is so laid back compared to her, it's a wonder they don't kill one another. Those kids are adorable, and smart. She is a very interactive, involved mom.

When she got her tummy tuck, I would have left her if I were him. She was downright nasty.
I started to see me in her. I did not like that one bit.

Dear God, what is wrong with people? My co-worker's sister has 9 kids....she's young...still in her mid 30's. Her husband cannot keep a job and they live in a 2 bedroom mobile home! They have the same philosophy about God determining how many kids they will have!!!
I want to know when and where they find time to conceive the little rascals!!
She home schools all of them. I would have already been put in a home somewhere. The poor woman does not ever go anywhere.
I volunteered to help when the family had a tragedy a few years ago when m co-worker's dad was murdered. They said she needed help with her laundry.
OMG! I've never seen so many dirty clothes. I ended up taking them to a wash and fold laundry & paid more than $40 to have it all done. I would still be working on it today if I hadn't done that.
I can't imagine having to face that day in and day out!

My grandmother had 17; one set of twins. We figured out once that she was either pregnant or nursing for nearly 30 years without a break.
Seeing as how my due date is either tomorrow or 10 days ago depending on the source, I have just one thing to say:
