Re: Game #215: Role Play
A couple more that work:
86. Nightmare on Elm Street + 57. Pig Alley = Nightmare Alley starring Bradley Cooper, who directed 33. Maestro
64. An American Werewolf in London + 97. Last Tango in Paris = An American in Paris starring Gene Kelly, who directed 25. Hello, Dolly
5. A Night to Remember + 67. Clash of the Titans = Remember the Titans starring Denzel Washington who directed 36. Fences.
61. Goodbye Mr. Chips + 73. Christopher Columbus = Goodbye Columbus starring Richard Benjamin who directed 14. My Favorite Year
45. California Split + 68. Executive Suite = California Suite starring Elaine May who directed 15. Ishtar
My Tangredi hypothesis: Films A and B can be mashed up to form the title of another movie that stars an actor who directed Film C.

I agree that you are on to something, but I worked for an hour today trying to figure out how to get Rob Reiner into your pattern since we have The Princess Bride, This Is Spinal Tap, and When Harry Met Sally all on the list. I could not figure it out. But I think we must be getting close.silverscreenselect wrote: ↑Mon Dec 18, 2023 2:10 pmI think I'm onto something here but I haven't quite figured it out. Some of these movies were directed by people with extensive acting careers: Mel Gibson, Clint Eastwood, Robert Redford, Bradley Cooper, Richard Attenborough, Rob Reiner. But some of the portmanteau films don't work that way. Wild in the Streets was directed by Barry Shear, who has no acting credits. Field of Dreams was directed by Phil Alden Robinson who also has no acting credits. I might be wrong about Wild in the Streets being a mash-up film, but I have to be right about Field of Dreams.silverscreenselect wrote: ↑Sun Dec 17, 2023 8:17 pmA thought here: Before Sunset + Boulevard Dreams = SUNSET BOULEVARD, which featured Erich von Stroheim, who directed Greed.

Re: Game #215: Role Play
It took me a while to figure out what Frank meant by this, but this is KISS ME STUPID.
And 17. Kiss Me Stupid goes with 40. Kate & Leopold for Kiss Me Kate, which features a young Bob Fosse (I admit I looked the cast up to find this) who directed 87. Lenny.

My Wild in the Streets film guess was wrong. The actual match is 42. Mean Girls + 29. Panic in the Streets = Mean Streets starring Robert De Niro who directed 78. A Bronx Tale.

One more before I go to bed.
13. The Big Parade + 83. The Clock = The Big Clock (one of my favorite noirs, remade as a Kevin Costner film), with Charles Laughton who directed 56. Night of the Hunter.

I'm not suire about this one:
8. The Hunt for Red October OR 74. The Red Shoes + 34. Mystic River = Red River with John Wayne, who directed 22. The Alamo.
This probably means that either 8 or 74 is wrong.

Is it possible that #12 is one of the Batman movies because we would then have:
12. BATMAN? + 47. MAX DUGAN RETURNS = Batman Returns with Danny Devito who directed 18. THROW MOMMA FROM THE TRAIN

51. This was the first non-American production to win the Oscar as Best Picture.
ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT
I think this is wrong. The 1930 All Quiet on the Western Front was produced by Universal and was am American studio film.
I am betting it's HENRY V.
THE PRIDE AND THE PASSION + EXTREME PREJUDICE = PRIDE AND PREJUDICE with Laurence Olivier, who directed Henry V.

Olivier's Henry V was nominated for Best Picture but did not win. However, his Hamlet a couple of years later did win the Best Picture Oscar, so there's your match.mellytu74 wrote: ↑Wed Dec 20, 2023 9:45 pm51. This was the first non-American production to win the Oscar as Best Picture.
