Former astronaut best known for helping rescue the Apollo 13 astronauts after he was pulled from the mission himself a few days before takeoff. He had been exposed to measles but was replaced and then helped devise the rescue plan that brought the crew back safely. (He was played by Gary Sinise in the Apollo 13 movie.) He later went to the moon on Apollo 18 and flew on the space shuttle as well.
Age 87.

Correction - he flew on Apollo 16.
