What I've Been Watching on TV

There's a lot of surprisingly good stuff available to stream on TV now.

Justified: City Primeval (on FX and Hulu): A sequel to Justified, it sends Raylan Givens to Detroit on the path of a psycho killer from Oklahoma. The villain isn't as good as the best from the original show, but the supporting cast, including Raylan's teenage daughter is an upgrade.

Dark Winds Season 2 (on AMC): Based on the Tony Hillerman books, it's about Navajo tribal police investigating a murder that may be tied to a tribal death cult or good old-fashioned rich white man's greed. It takes place around 1970 (people watch one of the moon landings).

Black Snow (on AMC): Airing after Dark Winds, it's an Australian series about a cold case investigation of the murder of a high school girl 25 years later that comes to light again when clues are found in a time capsule the class buried at the time that gets dug up as part of a local celebration.

Heelz Season 2 (on Starz): Series about a D-list wrestling league headquartered in a small Georgia town trying to stay in business. In part, it's domestic drama, and in part about the business aspect of pro wrestling minus 99% of the glitz.

Hijack (Apple TV+): A seven-hour British miniseries starring Idris Elba about a plane hijacking. It's similar to 24 because the flight from Dubai to London takes seven hours, so the show unfolds in real time. You don't learn what the hijackers want until well into the series and there's a number of plot twists along the way.

And what I'm going to be watching tonight:

Sharkansas Women's Prison Massacre: All I know is the title and that it stars Traci Lords. Available on Hoopla, TubiTV, and Crackle (the last two with ads). I'll have a report on this one for Beebs.

And what I'm going to be watching tonight:

Sharkansas Women's Prison Massacre: All I know is the title and that it stars Traci Lords. Available on Hoopla, TubiTV, and Crackle (the last two with ads). I'll have a report on this one for Beebs.

Bad. Really bad. Really, really, really, really, really bad. When Traci Lords is the best actor in the film, you know you're in trouble. Most of the rest of the cast seemed like understudies in a small town community theater production. Oh, there is no prison, just a sign on a one-room building that says Arkansas Women's Prison. A group of extremely attractive women in shorts and tee shirts emerge from that building and go into the swamp to clear some stumps. They also have perfect makeup on because you have to look your best when you go out on a road crew in the Arkansas swamps because you never know when you'll run into a half dozen sharks or so. (I didn't know there were swamps in Arkansas.)

The sharks are really prehistoric sharkasoaruses that lived in an ocean deep below the surface of Arkansas. (That's what the movie's scientist calls them and he should know.) Some fracking explosions let the sharks loose into the swamp waters where they can swallow people whole, even though they're only about six feet long. Oh, they can also emerge from the water and burrow across dry land at very fast speeds (like the creatures in Tremors). And they can jump out of their burrowing trenches into the air to chomp on people. I think the film makers spent less on the shark effects than they did on the cast. The film was directed by Jim Wynorski, who directed Traci Lords first legit movie, Not of This Earh, which is actually a goofy good cult film, nearly 35 years ago. His recent work includes classics like The Devil Wears Nada, Monster Cruise, Camel Spiders, Piranhaconda, Cobra Gator, and Attack of the 50-Foot CamGirl.

You would think a movie like this would have tons of violence and nudity, but there's very little of the former shown and none of the latter. It does have some "so groaningly bad, it's funny" moments.

There was one line that I thought was intentionally funny, and about a half dozen other moments of the so bad, it's good variety. The rest of the time, I kept waiting for the next TubiTV commercial so I could run to the refrigerator.

So, other than coke bottle, van color discussion and maybe Bonnie and Cyde, no real haha funny. I would classify it as mediocrally boringly bad. Dint meet my high level of true crap9la.

Finished season 1 of Ratched earlier in the week and it was generally intriguing until the storyline went all banana
pants the last few episodes.

Season 2 looks like a go, but it may be awhile.

A combination of factors, including the busy schedules of the cast and Ryan Murphy’s various other projects, mean that at the time of writing, production on season 2 of Ratched hasn’t even started yet. That means that, as of early 2023, it looks like 2024 is the earliest we could be seeing Ratched season 2 return, and it could be even later than that.

Our favorite movies that are so bad they're great:

The Ritz (1976, Rita Moreno, Treat Williams, Jack Weston, Jerry Stiller, and F. Murray Abraham, who spends the whole story in a towel) - classic farce, based on a play by Terrence McNally

It's not really fair to say this movie is bad, but it is frequently groan-making.

Pass the Ammo (1987, Bill Paxton, Tim Curry, Annie Potts) - spoofs Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker, sort-of

Also not dreadful, but not great either: "The crack of dawn ain't safe around that man!"
