Lady and the Tramp

#1 Post by Beebs52 » Fri Jul 21, 2023 6:37 pm

Disney. Disclaimer
Racism and stereotypes in classic Disney films
Lady and the Tramp (1955): Two Siamese cats, Si and Am, are depicted with anti-Asian stereotypes. There is also a scene at a dog pound where heavily-accented dogs all portray the stereotypes of the countries their breeds are from - such as Pedro the Mexican Chihuahua, and Boris the Russian Borzoi

Watching this, remembering. "We are Siamese if you please." Had several Siamese cats during my youth. Never thought anyone was disparaging Thailand.

Were the Scottie and bloodhound racist?
What about all the Eyetalian peeps?

Disney is full of shit.
Well, then

That's not wokeism; that's an acknowledgement of the racism that was prevalent in Hollywood for decades, including Disney films. Remember Song of the South? Note the slanted eyes and prominent buck teeth on the cats.

These images were common back then, including in Disney and Looney Tunes cartoons:

And it wasn't just animated films. This is Mickey Rooney in the 1961 classic Breakfast at Tiffany's

By the way, here's how Disney handled the "Siamese" cats in the 2019 remake of Lady and the Tramp:

We were brought up in an era when these depictions were considered normal. Disney has tried several approaches to deal with this problem. Some movies simply aren't shown anymore, like Song of the South. Others have objectionable scenes cut out, like the crows in Dumbo (the head crow is actually named Jim Crow). For Lady and the Tramp, they run the movie with a disclaimer that hopefully allows parents to explain to their kids why these depictions are problematic.

Unless you're Flock and think it's just good wholesome fun at the expense of Asians and anyone who says otherwise is woke.
