RIP NatGeo

#1 Post by earendel » Sat Jul 01, 2023 7:19 am

National Geographic is ceasing distribution of its magazine via newsstands; it will be available only to subscribers. They have also laid off their writing staff and most of the editorial staff - they will depend upon freelance writers for content.

As a matter of fact I have. I have a copy that discusses the reconstruction/renovation of Notre Dame cathedral. Granted it's from February 2022, but the articles hardly seem "woke". There's a photo essay about a family's military service, an article about Julius Caesar's image, and articles about fish, a K2 climb, and the future of Sudan. None of them seem particularly "woke".

At the time of National Geographic's gender issue, its majority owner was Rupert Murdoch, not Disney. I see that Fox News is on the "woke" list too. It seems that every business to the left of MyPillow and Hobby Lobby has become "woke." Even NASCAR celebrated pride month.

As this article indicates, many print magazines have ceased operations since the pandemic began. Since this linked article, Parade Magazine (a fixture in Sunday newspapers for decades) and Ring Magazine (the monthly boxing magazine) are among those that have either gone out of business entirely or gone to digital only. The reasons are a combination of rising print costs, changing methods of readership, and fewer in-person impulse purchases. Other magazines have cut back on the number of printed issues a year. We get something called TV Weekly, which is a decent competitor to TV Guide (which went biweekly several years back). Earlier this year, TV Weekly went to biweekly issues (although the title didn't change). And you might ask Skoop what's happened to printed newspapers over the past few years as they emphasize the digital versions of their "papers."

Disney has been emphasizing National Geographic as part of its Disney Plus offering. It's a competitor to Discovery Plus, which has been merged into Max (the Warner service that used to be HBO Max). Sad to say, many more people would rather watch an hourlong documentary on African wildlife than read an article on the subject with a bunch of still pictures in a printed magazine.

Gee, I wonder where all those people have gone? Oh, wait....

One Network Is Crushing Ratings as Fox and CNN Take a Nosedive
Champagne corks were flying at MSNBC in June, as the news network is significantly closing the gap against Fox and CNN for the much-coveted 25-to-54 age primetime viewer demographic in the second quarter of 2023. With a 23% hike in the age-bracket advertisers favor most with ad spending, and a 16% rise in total viewership, MSNBC is generating momentum at a time its largest competitors are losing ground, according to Nielsen ratings. MSNBC also clocked in at second place for total primetime viewership in June while also finishing second in total daytime viewers, gaining 14% of total day viewers in June, while adding 20% of viewers in the 24-54 demographic over the same time period.

The left-leaning network’s ascension comes at a time when broadcast news mainstays CNN and Fox are losing viewers at an alarming clip. Both networks have suffered double-digit declines in the past month as internal struggles have seemingly impacted viewer numbers. Fox News lost a whopping 37% of viewers in its May 2022 to May 2023 primetime numbers. CNN is floundering as well, as it lost 21% of its 25-to-54 viewers in May.

As CNN and Fox News stumble, MSNBC is taking full advantage. The network is gaining fast on industry leader Fox News, tightening the total viewer gap to just 174,000 in June. MSNBC has also generated double-digit viewer growth across the board, led by weekday news broadcast Katy Tur Reports (up 44%), The Beat With Ari Melber (up 28% in total viewers), and Monday night’s The Rachel Maddow Show (the leading primetime cable news show).

With wall-to-wall coverage of the 2024 presidential election already on the horizon, there’s no doubt CNN and Fox will double efforts to regain lost viewers, but it won’t be easy. As the months of May and June have demonstrated, MSNBC isn’t backing down as it solidifies its burgeoning viewer base and closes the gap on two industry news leaders who’ve lost much of their luster.
I guess all those people who were watching Tucker Carlson are now checking out Rachel Maddow.

Go woke; go to the bank.

Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

The magazine suffered because print is no longer fashionable.

Their editor did make herself seem silly, apologizing for being white, and the transgender issue didn’t really have much to do with what you would think would be the magazine’s central Mission.

But it was dying anyway
