Not that this is good new, but it does give some comfort, for a few days, anyway.

The Titan craft has enough oxygen to keep five crew members alive for 96 hours beyond the launch, which means it would run out sometime Thursday.

If I had a spare $250,000 sitting around, probably the last thing I would want to spend it on would be to go down 12,000 feet below the ocean's surface to see ship wreckage, no matter how famous it was. I'm happy enough just seeing the documentary footage.

Sadder and sadder. Apparently it hadn't been actully certified. Some interviewees think it may have imploded.

When the Titanic sank, Bruce Ismay, the Chairman of the White Star Line, was one of the passengers who survived. He was villified in both the US and England for cowardice for doing so. Many claimed he pulled rank to make sure he got off in time. He never really recovered mentally from the experience, even though he lived another 25 years.

Wow. OceanGate, the company that owns the missing submersible, fired an employee a few years ago after he filed safety complaints against them. The employee specifically said the sub was not capable of descending to such extreme depths before he was fired.

The banging could be anything, not necessarily "signs of life". Could be something banging against the 111-year-old Titanic wreckage. Could be generic ocean detritus smacking together.

According to CBS News, the CEO of this company once stated in an interview the following:

"You know, there's a limit. At some point safety is just pure waste. I mean, if you just want to be safe, don't get out of bed...Don't get in your car. Don't do anything. At some point, you're going to take some risk, and it really is a risk/reward question. I think I can do this just as safely by breaking the rules."

Triton to build submersible for Ohio businessman's mission to the Titanic

Submarine specialists Triton will build one of its 4000/2 models for Ohio-based real estate tycoon Larry Connor. The project, called "The Explorer - Return to the Titanic," will take place in the summer of 2026.

Connor, who is also a NASA-certified astronaut, plans to visit the Titanic wreck in a bid to dispel some of the fears around deep sea diving in the wake of the Oceangate submersible disaster. In the weeks after the disaster, which killed five people after a catastrophic implosion in June last year, Connor voiced concerns about declining investment in deep ocean research and exploration. He hopes that the recently announced mission will prove that deep sea diving is safe as long as a fully certified submarine is used.

The dive will be co-ordinated by Patrick Lahey, one of the world's most experienced divers and co-founder and CEO of Triton Submarines. He previously called the submersible involved in the Oceangate disaster "a monstrosity". Speaking to BOAT, Lahey recalled imploring friend and Titanic expert Paul-Henri Nargeolet, who was killed in the incident, not to dive in the uncertified OceanGate submersible. "I tried to do everything I could to discourage him from going out there. I know many people that knew him did the same thing," he said.
