Lyrically Speaking - 2/10/23

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Fri Feb 10, 2023 5:02 am

What, is it over already? Yes, it's time for the 25th and final game of the 2023 LSWE. This season really seemed to fly by this time, maybe because for the first time since my 50-game days I was actually halfway prepared and only had to come up with games on the fly a few times. A lesson I'm sure I won't take to heart for next year....

So for the finale, since I don't really have any good sources of random pop music to cull songs from anymore... I decided to try something a bit more methodical, but almost as random. Since I have a good source for Billboard Top 40 charts from the past, I went back to the second week of February for each year over a 25 year time period and picked out the song that was in the #13 slot that week. I chose 1966-1990 as the quarter century for this game since it probably best represents the songs the LSWE uses and my players know. The game starts with the #13 hit at this time in 1966 and continues in chronological order with the final song being from 1990. Each of these songs below was at the very least a Top 13 hit at one time, so though undoubtedly some of these songs have faded into obscurity, they were big on the radio in their day. One of these songs is a cover of a much better known version that preceded it, so you get a bonus point if you answer with the correct artist for it...

I hope you've all enjoyed playing the LSWE as much as I've enjoyed presenting it to you this year!

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist...

1. 'Cause he gets up in the morning,
And he goes to work at nine,
And he comes back home at five-thirty,
Gets the same train every time.

2. The old house is still standing
Though the paint is cracked and dry
And there's that old oak tree that I used to play on

3. If I had told her that I loved her
She would have stayed til who knows when,
but I guess she couldn't understand it
when I said I wanna be your friend,

4. I started to cry
Which started the whole world laughing

5. When you're down and out
When you're on the street
When evening falls so hard
I will comfort you

6. I don't know how in the world
To stop thinking of him
'Cause I still love him so
I end each day the way I start out
Crying my heart out

7. We can never know about the days to come
But we think about them anyway
And I wonder if I'm really with you now
Or just chasin' after some finer day

8. If you're out on a date
And you bring it home late it's a sin

9. We've got to pray for all
The brothers under thine hand
Pray for all the sisters
That's doing the best she can

10. Lost and alone on some forgotten highway
Traveled by many, remembered by few
Lookin' for something that I can believe in
Lookin' for something that I'd like to do with my life

11. Some fools think of happiness
Blissfulness, togetherness
Some fools fool themselves, I guess
They're not foolin' me

12. Last night I waved goodbye now it seems years
I'm back in the city where nothing is clear
But thoughts of me holding you bringing us near

13. When I see your face like the mornin' Sun you spark me to shine
Tell all the world my need is fulfilled and that's a new design

14. Stopped at Third and Forty-three, exit to the night
It's gonna be ecstasy, this place was meant for me
I feel so good tonight

15. Oh I could hide 'neath the wings
Of the blue bird as she sings

16. It's such a crazy old town
It can drag you down
'Til you run out of dreams
So you party all night to the music and lights
But you don't know what happiness means

17. Don't need a whore, I don't need no booze
Don't need a virgin priest
But I need someone I can cry to
I need someone to protect

18. This generation
Rules the nation
With version

19. But when the music changed, the plan was re-arranged
He went to dance with someone else.

20. And I know, yes I know that its plain to see
We're so in love when we're together
Now I know, that I need you here with me
From tonight until the end of time

21. We all want the stuff that's found in our wildest dreams
It gets kinda rough in the back of our limousine

22. You take your road, I'll take mine
The paths have both been beat (yeah)
Searchin' for a change of pace
Love needs to be sweetened

23. I can feel the soft silk of your blouse
And them soft thrills in our little fun house
Then the lights go out and it's just the three of us
You me and all that stuff we're so scared of

24. 'Cause when I think about your loving
Then I get a good beat
I get excited from the feeling
That it's giving to me
So won't you keep it coming baby
'Cause I love the joy you bring

25. Now I don't want to tell you how to live
Don't want to put the blame
But don't you think it's time for you and I
To try to make a change

I know I've pooped out in the game, but I blame the elbow and general lack of knowledge. But I love reading everyone else's stuff. Your ability to curate this music is astounding.

And he comes back home at five-thirty,

I feel so good tonight
New York Groove - Ace Frehley (The only hit from any of the Kiss solo albums...)

15. Oh I could hide 'neath the wings
Of the blue bird as she sings
Daydream Believer - Anne Murray (The Monkees got you credit, but Anne got you an extra point..... The Anne Bonus?)

16. It's such a crazy old town
It can drag you down
'Til you run out of dreams
So you party all night to the music and lights
But you don't know what happiness means
Every Woman in the World - Air Supply

17. Don't need a whore, I don't need no booze
Don't need a virgin priest
But I need someone I can cry to
I need someone to protect
Waiting on a Friend - Rolling Stones (Either the oft-played video on MTV was censored, or I just don't remember these lines....)

18. This generation
Rules the nation
With version
Pass the Dutchie - Musical Youth

19. But when the music changed, the plan was re-arranged
He went to dance with someone else.

25. Now I don't want to tell you how to live
Don't want to put the blame

To try to make a change
We Can't Go Wrong - The Cover Girls (I don't think I had quite stopped listening to new music at this point in time, but I don't recall this at all....)

Image Bonus: What could possibly be more fun than playing the LSWE?

Earendel had the correct answer, but correct doesn't always get you the big points. The final IBB goes to Weasel for one of the most disturbing Image Bonuses in LSWE history....

Well Respected Man - Kinks

Damn, it's the Kinks but I can only think of 'well respected man', is that the title?

2. The old house is still standing
Though the paint is cracked and dry
And there's that old oak tree that I used to play on

Green Green Grass of Home - Porter Wagoner

This was #13 on the pop charts??? My dad's band used to do this and it wasn't until I was practically an adult that I realized the dude was dead. Fun Fact: Charley Pride was going to do this and was blocked by TPTB because Mary had hair of gold, which meant she was white and he....wasn't. Of course these days it seems every black woman named Mary has hair of gold...

3. If I had told her that I loved her
She would have stayed til who knows when,
but I guess she couldn't understand it
when I said I wanna be your friend,

I Wonder What She's Doing Tonight - Boyce and Hart

4. I started to cry
Which started the whole world laughing

I Started a Joke - Bee Gees

5. When you're down and out
When you're on the street
When evening falls so hard
I will comfort you
A
Bridge of Troubled Water - S&G

6. I don't know how in the world
To stop thinking of him
'Cause I still love him so
I end each day the way I start out
Crying my heart out

One Less Bell to Answer - 5th Dimension

RIP Burt)

7. We can never know about the days to come
But we think about them anyway
And I wonder if I'm really with you now
Or just chasin' after some finer day

8. If you're out on a date
And you bring it home late it's a sin

Your Mama Don't Dance - Loggins & Messina

Although the correct answer should be Poison....

9. We've got to pray for all
The brothers under thine hand
Pray for all the sisters
That's doing the best she can

10. Lost and alone on some forgotten highway
Traveled by many, remembered by few
Lookin' for something that I can believe in
Lookin' for something that I'd like to do with my life

Did you have to start with a snippet that would lodge Hotel California in my head to the detriment of all others??

11. Some fools think of happiness
Blissfulness, togetherness
Some fools fool themselves, I guess
They're not foolin' me

The Hit That Isn't Hair of the Dog - Nazareth

The incorrect answer is the 5854033 people who have covered this. Except Cher, she's never the wrong answer.

12. Last night I waved goodbye now it seems years
I'm back in the city where nothing is clear
But thoughts of me holding you bringing us near

Weekend in New England - Barry Manilow

I've always wanted to go to New England. Between this song, the Celtics and Sox and Moonlight in Vermont, it seemed like a good deal. But I've never been. Maybe someday...like this June when YOUR DENVER NUGGETS!!!!!11 are going to kick ass at the Garden! (Yeah, I know it's the Fleet Center, but the Celtics will always play at Boston Garden, just like the Broncos will always play at Mile High...

13. When I see your face like the mornin' Sun you spark me to shine
Tell all the world my need is fulfilled and that's a new design

14. Stopped at Third and Forty-three, exit to the night
It's gonna be ecstasy, this place was meant for me
I feel so good tonight

New York Groove - Ace Frehley

I know somebody didn't it before, but I don't know who it was and, judging from the years here, this seems right. I know that was the only song out of the four solo KISS albums that had a single. And the only one my sister bought because she liked Frehley.

15. Oh I could hide 'neath the wings
Of the blue bird as she sings

Daydream Believer - Anne Murray

Okay, this has to be the trick one, because 1. it's way too late for the Monkees and 2. I actually heard Murray's voice in my head. Oh, Canada!

16. It's such a crazy old town
It can drag you down
'Til you run out of dreams
So you party all night to the music and lights
But you don't know what happiness means

17. Don't need a whore, I don't need no booze
Don't need a virgin priest
But I need someone I can cry to
I need someone to protect

Waiting on a Friend - Rolling Stones

Very underrated Stones period...

18. This generation
Rules the nation
With version

Pass the Dutchie - Musical Youth

with version, not vision?

19. But when the music changed, the plan was re-arranged
He went to dance with someone else.

Let the Music Play - Somebody that wasn't Robyn

20. And I know, yes I know that its plain to see
We're so in love when we're together
Now I know, that I need you here with me
From tonight until the end of time

Something From - Chicago

I can hear Peter Cetera's voice

21. We all want the stuff that's found in our wildest dreams
It gets kinda rough in the back of our limousine

22. You take your road, I'll take mine
The paths have both been beat (yeah)
Searchin' for a change of pace
Love needs to be sweetened

Nobody's Fool - Cinderella

This was probably they're biggest hit, but it couldn't hold a candle to The More Things Change. Why is it always the power ballads that hit?

23. I can feel the soft silk of your blouse
And them soft thrills in our little fun house
Then the lights go out and it's just the three of us
You me and all that stuff we're so scared of

24. 'Cause when I think about your loving
Then I get a good beat
I get excited from the feeling
That it's giving to me
So won't you keep it coming baby
'Cause I love the joy you bring

25. Now I don't want to tell you how to live
Don't want to put the blame
But don't you think it's time for you and I
To try to make a change

And, as you can tell, the tail of the 80s is when I started listening to more classic rock on the radio (when did Motley Crue become classic rock?)

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist that was in the #13 spot on the Hot 100 duirng the second week of February in a different year.

Kroxquo Bonus: Name the song with artist that you heard most recently.

Okay, I was coming home from bingo Saturday night around 11, which means Late Nights with Alice Cooper was on the radio. It's only about a 15 minutes drive that time of night and I remember a Vicky Van Nuys bit, some adverts, and Alice talking about this and that and laying some fun facts on us, but I don't know if he started a song before I pulled up in the driveway. I'm sure there was music when I turned on the car, but I was navigating through the parking lot and not paying attention. I do remember what was playing when I pulled into the parking lot at 2:30 (what? It was a double session and there was a 10k must go!) because I was unashamedly singing along to it (I can't resist a good waltz or 6/8 time)...

I'll Be - Edwin McCain

Image Bonus: What could possibly be more fun than playing the LSWE?

That's a trick question, because NOTHING could be more fun than playing the LSWE!!!1 (Unless I would've won the must go, then I definitely would have a picture to go with it

So, instead, I'll thank you for bringing back the LSWE. It's the first time I've played in a few years, I think, and I definitely abided by the Hottie Rule! I especially like the themes this time around,
And spending all this time writing a sappy mash note to you hopefully didn't put me behind the cut off time!

Thank god my preview didn't give me an ISE

Damn it, I would have been in well before the answer post if I didn't spend the time for Casual Observations and Fun Facts. But I know my adoring public clamours for my CO&FF, so what's a girl to do? Give the people what they want or leave them asking for more???

WOOHOO!!!1

I didn't even take the time to make toast, just grabbed some Fig Newtons to have with my coffee...

I was supposed to go to Cripple Creek yesterday but I was one hurting unit after my big excursion Saturday (who knew that 7 1/2 hours in a bingo parlour could be so bad for your arthritis?) and, after a cup of early morning coffee, I only unassed the bed yesterday to go to the bathroom, which was a lot because I'm sofa king old...
