Hey, SSS, This Guy Just Insulted You
You better straighten him out.
Looks like the Winnie the Pooh distress signal is being sent up for you to go after this guy and make clear to him that there are simply no needs for any spy platforms other than satellites-After all, it is your claimed area (one of many) of expertise.

>>>"Anyone telling you that balloons are no different that satellites and it’s no big deal is a liar and a complete and total idiot to boot. Satellites are moving, and moving fast. There are limits to what they can observe, when they can observe, and on the data they collect. A balloon can be a remarkably steady platform, especially if it can be steered and controlled. Using modern optics, hyperspectral and multispectral imaging, and other sensing systems (and you can pack a lot on a truss that size), you would be amazed at the data that can be collected. Especially if you have nuclear thermocouples or other systems for the real power hogs so that solar can go to other systems including steering.
An amazing amount of data. Data that was collected and transmitted back to China."<<<<

We use balloons too, to take atmospheric readings at various altitudes. I can't say why those are important.

The dummy who wrote that apparently has never heard of geosynchronous orbits. What sort of "steady platform" is a balloon being blown about by the upper atmosphere winds?Spock wrote: ↑Mon Feb 06, 2023 2:13 pmYou better straighten him out.

Geosynchronous orbit is a long way out. I'm not sure how much resolution can be achieved from that distance. --BobBob Juch wrote: ↑Mon Feb 06, 2023 2:22 pmThe dummy who wrote that apparently has never heard of geosynchronous orbits. Spock, the military knew about this balloon since Wednesday. Do you really think that if the DoD thought this balloon could get any sensitive information the Chinese didn't already have, they would have waited three days to shoot it down? And if there were some sensitive operations going on at a military base within the balloon's reach, don't you think the military would have taken suitable precautions? Or would you rather be the farmer whose barn got leveled by a hundred-pound piece of debris falling from 60,000 feet? The Chinese got away with this before three times when Trump was President. Now, what we're digging out of 50 feet of water off the South Carolina coast probably has more intelligence value than whatever pictures the Chinese took.

1) Actually they knew about them Tuesday, when they were over the Aleutian Islands ( a great place to shoot them down).silverscreenselect wrote: ↑Mon Feb 06, 2023 3:33 pmSpock, the military knew about this balloon since Wednesday. 2) The "three times when Trump was president" were
a) not known until after Trump left office (latent anlaysis of something gave the DOD information that a Chinese balloon may likely have entered US airspace)
b) not over such sensitive areas
c) over a much briefer span of time
3) if the Chinese can't get anything they don't already have, why did they send the balooon? Are you saying they are stupid?

It's like telling a kid that there's nothing in the closet they want to see. They don't believe you and go in the closet and learn... there's nothing there worth seeing.
Much spying is a fishing expedition. You surveill something in case there's anything worthwhile to find. Most of the time there isn't.

We have game wardens in Texas, armed, to ensure folks don't fish where or when they aren't suppose to. But I guess we value fish more than the Biden admin values our national defense secrets.silverscreenselect wrote: ↑Mon Feb 06, 2023 4:36 pmIt's like telling a kid that there's nothing in the closet they want to see. Do you really think that we were going to put any top secret equipment on display while there was a Chinese spy balloon in the vicinity?BackInTex wrote: ↑Mon Feb 06, 2023 6:39 pmWe have game wardens in Texas, armed, to ensure folks don't fish where or when they aren't suppose to. And speaking of national defense secrets, we now know considerably more about Chinese defense secrets than we did last week at this time. And as the debris gets examined more closely and reverse engineered, we're going to know much more.
