Lyrically Speaking - 2/3/23

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Thu Feb 02, 2023 11:56 pm

I've featured music every Monday on my blog for a long time, and occasionally that will take the form of a Top 30 countdown. A few years ago, I put together something I called the "Top 30 Songs I Just Feel Like Playing" countdown... compiling thirty songs that I liked A LOT. Now it's hardly a true representation of my absolute favorite songs.... any song I'd already featured on Monday was ineligible, and I did some juggling to ensure there was variety by both decade and genre. But safe to say that none of those thirty songs would have me reaching to change the radio station. Quite the opposite, I'd be cranking up the volume!

So of those thirty songs (five of which have already appeared in this year's LSWE), I chose sixteen for this game. Since I'm pretty sure TBone was the only one from this Bored reading my blog at the time, I don't think anyone will have an advantage in this game.... but if so, oh well! Enjoy my eclectic and questionable taste in music....

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist...

1. Tonight I'm gonna break away
Just to wait and see

2. She's juicy and she's trouble
She gets it to me good
My woman gives me power
Goes right down to my blood

3. Don't tell me "I don't want to be a girl like that"
Do you want to see a grown man cry?

4. Okay, you think you got a pretty face
But the rest of you is out of place

5. I come here looking for money
(Got to have it)
and end up leaving with love
Now you’ve left me with nothing

6. I dig snow and rain and bright sunshine

7. They deftly maneuver and muscle for rank
Fuel burning fast on an empty tank
Reckless and wild, they pour through the turns
Their prowess is potent and secretly stern

8. So much for the golden future, I can't even start
I've had every promise broken, there's anger in my heart

9. The wind blew some luck in my direction
I caught it in my hands today

10. Have you ever been close to tragedy?
Or been close to folks who have?
Have you ever felt the pain so powerful
so heavy you collapse?

11. Moonlight, you're just a heartache in disguise
Won't you keep my heart from breakin'
If it's only for a very short time?

12. Now once, I was down-hearted
Disappointment, was my closest friend

13. And mix your milk with my coco puff
Milky, milky coco
Mix your milk with my coco puff
Milky, milky
Right

14. What are we running for?
We've got the right to be angry
What are we running for?

15. Daddy works a long day
He'd be coming home late, yeah, he's coming home late
And he's bringing me a surprise
'Cause dinner's in the kitchen, and it's packed in ice

16. We'll be dancin' in the moonlight
Sailin' with the risin' sun
Livin' like we've never known
Goin' all the way

Ouch! I can hear this so clearly, and have heard it clearly for what? Three or four decades? It says, "Just you wait and see..." How clearly have I been hearing it?

OK, the meister is always right. In case the meister is wrong, see rule #1.

Crazy Love, Poco

Bad Moon Rising, Creedence Clearwater Revival. Through a concatenation of circumstances, I first heard this song before it hit the charts. And I knew it would be a hit. The only other song I can say that about is Make Love Stay. Fogelberg sang it in a local fundraising concert before he recorded it along with two other as yet unrecorded songs, and I picked Make Love Stay as the hit.

Just to wait and see
Crazy Love - Poco (I've kinda intentionally been posting smaller snippets of what I think are the highlight lyrics or certain songs this year. I think if I'd have posted the next two lines with it, more people would have recognized it...)

2. She's juicy and she's trouble
She gets it to me good
My woman gives me power
Goes right down to my blood
You Should Be Dancing - Bee Gees (THE BEST song from the most unfairly maligned musical genre in the history of the radio. If this song doesn't make you want to dance, you're already dead...)

3. Don't tell me "I don't want to be a girl like that"
Do you want to see a grown man cry?
Naughty Naughty - John Parr (Fuck St. Elmo's Fire. This is the only song he should be remembered for...)

4. Okay, you think you got a pretty face
But the rest of you is out of place
Fox on the Run - Sweet (This song took #1 on my countdown, which should surprise nobody paying attention...)

5. I come here looking for money
(Got to have it)
and end up leaving with love
Now you’ve left me with nothing
What Have I Done To Deserve This - Pet Shop Boys (One of those songs that reminds me of..... oh, what was her name again?)

6. I dig snow and rain and bright sunshine
Draggin' The Line - Tommy James (One of the holy trinity of songs my Dad would always turn up when it came on the radio, along with Spirit in the Sky and Black Velvet. Oh, and this is the ONLY song I'll ever waive the Phil Collins Rule for since nobody ever remembers Tommy without his Shondells...)

7. They deftly maneuver and muscle for rank
Fuel burning fast on an empty tank
Reckless and wild, they pour through the turns
Their prowess is potent and secretly stern
The Distance - Cake (Cake has SO many great songs.... and mini has to introduce me to them with goddamn "Nugget".....)

8. So much for the golden future, I can't even start
I've had every promise broken, there's anger in my heart
Breaking the Law - Judas Priest (Ian Fitzgerald's horrified reaction just makes this video....)

9. The wind blew some luck in my direction
I caught it in my hands today
Moonlight Feels Right - Starbuck (It's a MARIMBA, not a xylophone....)

10. Have you ever been close to tragedy?
Or been close to folks who have?
Have you ever felt the pain so powerful
so heavy you collapse?
The Impression That I Get - Mighty Mighty Bosstones (One of the few things the 90's got right...)

11. Moonlight, you're just a heartache in disguise
Won't you keep my heart from breakin'
If it's only for a very short time?
Queen of Hearts - Juice Newton (TiV's the one who first mentioned the Dave Edmunds version in one of my games. I'm still trying to wrap my head around that....)

12. Now once, I was down-hearted
Disappointment, was my closest friend
Higher and Higher - Jackie Wilson (Other than for my hurricane game from a decade ago, the name Rita Coolidge should never EVER be typed as an LSWE answer....)

13. And mix your milk with my coco puff
Milky, milky coco
Mix your milk with my coco puff
Milky, milky
Right
My Humps - Black Eyed Peas (It's weird that a certain short lived radio station someone used to listen to at work in 2006ish introduced me to both My Humps and The Humpty Dance. What were the odds?)

14. What are we running for?
We've got the right to be angry
What are we running for?
Invincible - Pat Benatar

15. Daddy works a long day
He'd be coming home late, yeah, he's coming home late
And he's bringing me a surprise
'Cause dinner's in the kitchen, and it's packed in ice
Pumped Up Kicks - Foster the People

16. We'll be dancin' in the moonlight
Sailin' with the risin' sun
Livin' like we've never known
Goin' all the way
Sweet Freedom - Michael McDonald (The only song this man has ever touched that I like....)

JJC Points:

Marley gets 2 JJC points for Kroxing a song by Efenwealt Wystle. I don't know if that's a person or a band, but as they say on Fangraphs, that's an 80 Grade name...

Panic gets a JJC point for a big hole in the ground...

Weasel gets a supermax for Dr. Wiggles Wiener Wagon and other greatest hits...

frank gets 2 JJC points for sticking with the classics...

BiT gets a JJC point for a warm thought on a day I'm freezing with no heat...

ear gets a JJC point for posting Perry Mason, because why not?

jarnon gets 2 JJC points for showing what stupid money will buy you...

Beebs gets 3 JJC points for working both Ed and RuPaul into a game...

mrk gets 3 JJC points for questioning my taste in music and for fucking around...

Sprots gets 2 JJC points for knowing who's right and for discovering Dan Fogelberg...

Krox gets 2 JJC points for copying from the dictionary...

melly gets 3 JJC points for cute and cuddly otters...

Vandal gets a supermax for getting Mike some Massengill...

Earl gets 3 JJC points for screeching tires and liking country AND western...

Esto gets 3 JJC points for comparing Pet Shop Boys to Slade, and for a prescient IB (Well, unless you consider I pretty much telegraphed the theme of today's game)....

Points:
