Lyrically Speaking - 2/1/23

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Wed Feb 01, 2023 7:41 am

You're probably aware that the LSWE has long had a rule named after a certain musician that allows you safely fall back on answering a song with the lead singer if you're unsure whether they had performed that song solo or with their band. You know... the guy whose name was censored on the old Bored. Well, that rule is out the window for this game...

Below are eight pairs of songs, with each pair sung by the same singer.... one song as a solo artist and one song with their group. You must correctly identify whether each song by the solo artist or the band to receive artist credit. And because sometimes the band and the solo artist may both perform the song at some point in time, I'm only counting the best known, most popular version for this game.

1 point for the title, 1 point for the exact artist....

1. Know it sounds funny
But I just can't stand the pain
Girl, I'm leaving you tomorrow

2. You were looking so good girl
Heads were turning
You and me on the town
Ooh, we let it all hang out

3. Now she don't even know my name
But I think she likes me just the same

4. Need I say I love you?
Need I say I care?
Need I say that emotions are something we don't share?

5. Been running so fast
Right from the starting line
No more connections
I don't need any more advice

6. Something 'bout you
Right here beside me
Touches the touched part of me like I can't believe

7. So I walked on down away from you
Maybe your attention was more
Than you could do

8. And it all comes down to you
Well, you know that it does and
Lightning strikes maybe once, maybe twice

9. Finished with my woman
'Cause she couldn't help me with my mind
People think I'm insane
Because I am frowning all the time

10. Screams break the silence
Waking from the dead of night
Vengence is boiling
He's returned to kill the light

11. So I'm ready to attack, gonna lead the pack
Gonna get a touchdown, gonna take you out

12. The moment that I step outside
So many reasons for me to run and hide

13. Rockin' steady in her daddy's car
She got the stereo
With the big guitars
And that's all right

14. Ain't nothin' like it, her shiny machine
Got the feel for the wheel
Keep the moving parts clean

15. Somewhere out on that horizon
Far away from the neon sky
I know there must be somethin' better
And I can't stay another night

16. We keep on grinnin' 'til the weekend comes.
Just a pinch between your cheek and gums.

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another pair of songs, sung by the same person, but one solo and one with their band. (4 total points if you don't mess it up!)

I can just see all the late answers pouring in, but I have a game to run and can't wait for procrastinators....

1. Know it sounds funny
But I just can't stand the pain
Girl, I'm leaving you tomorrow
Easy - Commodores

2. You were looking so good girl
Heads were turning
You and me on the town
Ooh, we let it all hang out
Running With the Night - Lionel Ritchie

3. Now she don't even know my name
But I think she likes me just the same
Sussudio - Phil Co!!ins (For Bored history's sake, this is the news story that led to the censoring of "Collins," along with the names "Kathleen," "Lohstroh," and "Geisler" from all boards on the ABC Local network [of which our TUB was one] sometime in late 2004, with the censorship added by Houston station KTRK due to flame wars on their boards over the story...)

4. Need I say I love you?
Need I say I care?
Need I say that emotions are something we don't share?
Throwing It All Away - Genesis

5. Been running so fast
Right from the starting line
No more connections
I don't need any more advice
Head Over Heels - Go Go's

6. Something 'bout you
Right here beside me
Touches the touched part of me like I can't believe
Mad About You - Belinda Carlisle

7. So I walked on down away from you
Maybe your attention was more
Than you could do
Stand Back - Stevie Nicks (Pretty much the only Stevie Nicks sung song, solo or with FM, that I like....)

8. And it all comes down to you
Well, you know that it does and
Lightning strikes maybe once, maybe twice
Gypsy - Fleetwood Mac

9. Finished with my woman
'Cause she couldn't help me with my mind
People think I'm insane
Because I am frowning all the time
Paranoid - Black Sabbath

10. Screams break the silence
Waking from the dead of night
Vengence is boiling
He's returned to kill the light
Bark At the Moon - Ozzy Osbourne

11. So I'm ready to attack, gonna lead the pack
Gonna get a touchdown, gonna take you out
Hollaback Girl - Gwen Stefani

12. The moment that I step outside
So many reasons for me to run and hide
Just A Girl - No Doubt (Funny how many people took the Annie Bonus on this song, but not the previous one!)

13. Rockin' steady in her daddy's car
She got the stereo
With the big guitars
And that's all right
Just Like Paradise - David Lee Roth (My fave DLR solo, by far...)

14. Ain't nothin' like it, her shiny machine
Got the feel for the wheel
Keep the moving parts clean
Panama - Van Halen

15. Somewhere out on that horizon
Far away from the neon sky
I know there must be somethin' better
And I can't stay another night
In the City - Eagles

16. We keep on grinnin' 'til the weekend comes.
Just a pinch between your cheek and gums.
All Night Long - Eagles (This was included on one of the Eagles live albums, which is why I added my disclaimer...)

Image Bonus: Show me someone who's doing it solo.

I was afraid for a while this game was going to be the opposite of the previous game, with almost everyone going with the one-man band. The image that broke up that initial one, Weasel's, made me laugh the hardest and gets the IBB...

JJC Points:

BiT gets 2 JJC points for Dick doing it solo (bonus because it wasn't stock clip art!)

Weasel gets a supermax for Pete Shelley (I knew that song from VH1 Classic, but had no idea he was from the Buzzcocks) and for TWMIM staying thirsty, very thirsty....

frank gets a JJC point for the fake Dick...

Panic gets a JJC point for an even faker Dick...

Krox gets a JJC point for having Hope...

mrk gets 2 JJC points for reminding me of all those drunken idiots who'd try to start the wave at ballgames, and the brainless followers who'd eventually play along....

melly gets 3 JJC points for lonely Doomsday Man and his sandwich board wardrobe...

ear gets 2 JJC points for going to space alone...

Vandal gets 3 JJC points for making me afraid of heights in my own home...
