RIP Madeleine Albright

Madeleine Albright, first female US secretary of state, dies

Madeleine Albright, the first woman US secretary of state, who helped steer Western foreign policy in the aftermath of the Cold War, has died. She was 84 years old.

Her death was confirmed in an email to staff of the Albright Stonebridge Group, a global strategy firm founded by Albright.
Albright was a central figure in President Bill Clinton's administration, first serving as US ambassador to the United Nations before becoming the nation's top diplomat in his second term. She championed the expansion of NATO, pushed for the alliance to intervene in the Balkans to stop genocide and ethnic cleansing, sought to reduce the spread of nuclear weapons, and championed human rights and democracy across the globe.

She was impressive.

The AP obit has a contributed credit from a now-deceased AP diplomatic correspondent. It always fascinates me to think that they have these stories written years in advance. I get why they do it, but it's a tiny bit creepy. We had an obit ready on Billy Graham for years, and what we ended up printing (20 pages' worth) included stories by a guy who had been gone from our paper for several years. But he had been the religion writer, and was the expert.

She was amazing, so bright, so well-spoken. I had the great good fortune to see her in person speaking as part of a national panel about 20 years ago. Because of the luminosity of the panelists, tickets to this particular session of the conference were in short supply. I wandered over anyway to see if I could get an SRO ticket, and serendipity gave me the extra ticket of the regional director for Sen. Michael Bennet. That session is the only thing about the conference that I remember.
