MLB, union reach tentative agreement on new CBA

Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association reached a tentative agreement on a new collective-bargaining agreement Thursday, ending the league's 99-day lockout of the players and salvaging a 162-game season, sources familiar with the situation told ESPN.

With the end of the second-longest work stoppage in the game's history, spring training camps will open Sunday, free-agent signings can begin Thursday night, and baseball will attempt to return to some semblance of normalcy after months of fraught negotiations.

There have been nine strikes and lockouts in major league history:

1972 Major League Baseball strike: Canceled 86 games. The owners conceded after 13 days.

1973 Major League Baseball lockout: Canceled no games. Owners and the MLBPA agreed on a three-year CBA and spring training games resumed.

1976 Major League Baseball lockout: Canceled no games. Players were locked out of spring training the first couple of weeks of March. No regular-season games were missed.

1980 Major League Baseball strike: Canceled no games. Players went on strike late in spring training and an agreement was reached before the beginning of the regular season.

1981 Major League Baseball strike: Canceled 713 games. The MLBPA went on strike after games on June 11 and games didn't resume until Aug.10.

1985 Major League Baseball strike: Canceled no games. This in-season strike lasted from Aug. 6-7, but the games missed were made up at the end of the season.

1990 Major League Baseball lockout: Canceled no games. This lockout destroyed spring training and pushed the start of the season back a week, but the full 162-game season was played.

1994–95 Major League Baseball strike: Canceled 938 games and the entire 1994 postseason, including the MLB World Series.

The season will begin on April 7, one week later than originally scheduled. All teams will play 162 games. The MLB playoffs will expand to 12 teams, with the two best division winners getting a first round bye. And....

the universal designated hitter.

Another change coming for 2023 is the balanced schedule. Currently teams play 19 games against teams in their own division, 6 or 7 against the other teams in the league, and 20 interleague games (most or all against teams in one division each year on a rotating basis). Under the 2023 schedule, each team will play at least one series against every other team in both leagues. Full details haven't been worked out.

Except the Government doesn't entirely shutdown, while there are not some teams that still play during strike/lockout.

I always work through a shutdown, though I was furloughed during that Congressional mess (while being legal advisor for my org’s furlough process).

Players who have not been vaccinated will not will permitted to travel into Canada for games against the Toronto Blue Jays. MLB has said that any such players will not be paid for any games missed as a result.

New York City mayor Eric Adams has lifted the vaccine mandate for local athletes. This means that Yankees and Mets players who are not vaccinated, including Aaron Judge, can play in home games. The Mets in particular are one of the least vaccinated teams in MLB. This also means that Kyrie Irving of the Brooklyn Nets will be allowed to play in the remaining home games and any playoff games.

Shohei Ohtani of the LA Angels will be the starting pitcher and DH for their season opener, thanks to a new MLB rule this season. Previously, if a starting pitcher batted and was replaced on the mound, the relief pitchers were also required to remain in the batting order. Now, Ohtani can remain in the game as DH even if someone else comes in to pitch.

Also, this season, doubleheaders will be nine innings each, same as before the COVID rules. However, extra inning games will still begin with the "ghost runner" on second base to reduce the length of the game.
