Re: Congratulations, Virginia
Best line that Li'l Spock saw from someone on Twitter was
that Virginia chanted "Let's Go Brandon."
Plus, however New Jersey turns out, and I think Murphy (the Democrat) will eke out a win=that is really the story of the night. dude with no national support or money almost wins flying under the radar.
Of the 2 races, I think it is New Jersey (however it turns out) that has the Democrats "Bidening" in their pants for 2022.

Yeah, me too.
Ditto for the Rep Candidate in New Jersey.
My main takeaway is that if "Orange Man Bad"--"TrumpTrumpTrumpTrumpTrumpTrumpTrump" and "Insurrection" didn't work in Virginia and New Jersey the Democrats might have to rewrite their planned playbook for 2022.
Watching with interest the race in South Jersey where a truck driver who spent $153 is leading the long-time State Senate Leader.
From David Wasserman (Cook Political Report) on Twitter.
>>>"Even though Murphy (D) eked out a statewide win, Dems' collapse in blue-collar parts of South Jersey is breathtaking - including State Senate President Steve Sweeney (D) currently trailing a truck driver who spent $153.<<<<
Also, at this time, it looks like Reps took the House of Delegates in Virginia-(A totally unforeseen result)

I don't understand why Republican women vote against their own interests as much as they do.

I give Youngkin credit for finding a non-issue (CRT, which isn't taught anywhere in the country) and turning it into a major campaign issue because Democrats never addressed it head on and McAuliffe's initial messaging on the subject was very ham handed.Spock wrote: ↑Thu Nov 04, 2021 7:47 amI wonder if Asra Nomani in this minute and a half clip is "Voting against her interests."

If patients demanded to have a say in how brain surgery was to be performed or passengers wanted to tell the pilot how to fly the plane, they would be laughed out of the room.

As a teacher who has been in the classroom for over 33 years (not counting all the student years), I appreciate what I believe is the intent of your message -- that teachers should be treated as professionals and that education should be guided by people who have actually studied it. Where I disagree with your analogy is that, when developing curriculum, discipline, pedagogy, and any other area of school life, we always ask ourselves, "who are the stakeholders in this? How can we get their honest input on this decision?" There is no doubt that, unlike brain surgery or plane piloting, parents are stakeholders in every decision we make. They should have input -- not necessarily final decision-making, but their input should be valued and respected.silverscreenselect wrote: ↑Thu Nov 04, 2021 8:01 amI give Youngkin credit for finding a non-issue (CRT, which isn't taught anywhere in the country) and turning it into a major campaign issue because Democrats never addressed it head on and McAuliffe's initial messaging on the subject was very ham handed.Spock wrote: ↑Thu Nov 04, 2021 7:47 amI wonder if Asra Nomani in this minute and a half clip is "Voting against her interests."

On the whole, I would rather tailor my teaching to parents than to politicians. Unfortunately, I rarely get that opportunity.

Re: Congratulations, Virginia
I would say that the patient and the passenger have a very definite stake in the safety of their surgery or flight. Unfortunately, what we too often get are the most vocal parents who in many cases have gotten their input from Fox News and the like railing against teaching "critical race theory" in the schools. I remember from my own school days taking part in essay contests in junior high school sponsored by the Daughters of the Confederacy. We couldn't use the term "Civil War" in our essay unless it was a direct quotation (We had to use "War Between the States").mrkelley23 wrote: ↑Thu Nov 04, 2021 8:28 amThere is no doubt that, unlike brain surgery or plane piloting, parents are stakeholders in every decision we make. If I lived in Virginia instead of Florida during that time, here's what I would have studied in school. I'd note that a lot of politicians who are in office now are my contemporaries and would have been taught the same things:
https://fredericksburg.com/news/educati ... 0cb70.html
You don't have to go very far to see that a lot of parents are still upset about anything "disturbing" being taught in school. The uproar about Beloved being on the high school reading list proves that. Those same parents aren't upset about those children learning about the Alamo or the Battle of the Little Big Horn, which were also disturbing (and are often presented in biased ways). Too often the most vocal parents are those who have the most biased points of view. If you've seen footage of school board meetings, whether on curriculum, vaccines, or mask mandates, you can see the ones who are doing all the shouting.
I don't envy you, having to weave your way through opposing political viewpoints to give students an accurate picture of history, science, and the like. But while education may be a political issue, facts are not. Slavery and its effects can't be whisked away by a majority vote of the most energized parents who show up at a school board meeting. I do think that this became a big issue in Virginia because Terry McAuliffe mishandled it initially and Democrats ignored it for too long, allowing Youngkin and the Republicans to have a months-long free ride in framing the issue. That's not the only reason McAuliffe lost, but it didn't help. I also think that if things were going better in Washington, this wouldn't have been a big issue with the voters who ultimately decided the election.

Re: Congratulations, Virginia
The Democrats have screwed up the negotiation and messaging on the infrastructure packages royally. No question. But much else of what's wrong currently are things that aren't in his control, like the delta variant (which Republicans made worse with their tactics), inflation, and supply chain issues. And many of these other issues are indirectly the result of the pandemic. The difference between Biden and Trump is that Biden has been silent when Trump was always quick to point the blame anywhere else but himself.tlynn78 wrote: ↑Thu Nov 04, 2021 9:39 amLMAO !! - you mean if the Biden administration wasn't an absolute dumpster fire, it might have helped? Re: Congratulations, Virginia
I would pay good money to see this:
""Hey @JoyAnnReid, I heard your shameful comments. I’ll be patiently waiting for an invite to come on to your show to respond. Be well!" Sears' campaign tweeted to the MSNBC host, later adding "While we're at it, let's make it a panel and invite @jamelehill to join in some thoughtful dialogue!"
When she's finished with that, maybe we can get BobJuch to idiot-splain to her why she's 'voting against her interests'

Sure, legalistically, something exactly called "Critical Race Theory" might not be taught, but it is the essence of the thing that is important and a lot of parents saw what was being taught as they paid more attention during the pandemic and they understand that "Critical Race Theory" under whatever label is being taught along with a lot of other Woke garbage.

Re: Congratulations, Virginia
Edward Durr definitely benefitted from flying under the radar. In all fairness, state house races in many states attract little attention and the most you learn about the candidates is a brief questionnaire with fairly generic questions that the local newspaper sends to them.
But now that he's been elected, people are looking at Durr more closely, and right wingers will be happy to know that he fits right in with the Donald Trump-era Republican candidate mold:
https://www.nj.com/politics/2021/11/tru ... media.htmlEdward Durr, the newly elected Republican state senator who shocked New Jersey by seemingly knocking off incumbent Senate President Steve Sweeney, has apologized and deleted his social media accounts after xenophobic and anti-Muslim messages surfaced that were posted from his accounts.
A post from his Twitter account in September 2019 labeled Islam “a false religion” and its prophet, Muhammad, a “pedophile.” “Mohammed was a pedophile! Islam is a false religion! Only fools follow Muslim teachings! It is a cult of hate!” A pair of tweets from Durr’s account in 2017 and 2018 also called U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez, D-N.J., a “pedophile.” Multiple posts from his Facebook account downplayed the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol — one called it “not an insurrection ... (but) an unauthorized entry by undocumented federal employers!” And another Facebook post took a shot at Vice President Kamala Harris, alluding to her gender and race.
