Booster shots
We will get the booster. But, essentially, this all really has been an ongoing clinical trial with us as participants. Sigh.

Re: Booster shots
The vaccines were developed before the delta variant and worked as promised against what was out there at the time. We get flu shots every year but no one thinks of us as participating in a clinical trial in that regard.
BTW, when they were talking about developing a vaccine originally, the talk I heard was 70% effectiveness and that the scientists would be very happy to get a vaccine that was 70% effective. Instead, we got two vaccines that were over 90% effective. That's a remarkable achievement.

Effective less than a year with varying percentages. Supposedly flu lasts for a year. MMR, DPT, polio etc last longer. Mind you I realize we're under the gun timewise and transmissionwise. We must do what we can do, thus my boostering, masking, etc.silverscreenselect wrote: ↑Wed Aug 18, 2021 4:02 pmThe vaccines were developed before the delta variant and worked as promised against what was out there at the time. Or, you could look at it this way. You can be an early adopter of a vaccine that works pretty damn well at keeping you out of the hospital (and that, not keeping you from getting sick at all, is its job) and hasn't put anyone in the hospital, or you can take your chances with a disease that we know has killed roughly half a percent of the entire U.S. population in a little more than a year despite our taking extraordinary efforts to slow its spread.
I'm glad you got the vaccine and that you'll get the booster. So will I, when my turn arrives in late December. --Bob

You don't need to be defensive. I was simply stating a fairly objective fact. Not that I would discourage anyone from getting a vaccine, mask where necessary etc. You are not the only Covid virtue signaler. Re: Booster shots
The CDC disagrees with you. Stop lying. Although statistically rare, many people have been hospitalized due to reactions to the vaccines.
https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-nc ... vents.html
Serious adverse events after COVID-19 vaccination are rare but may occur.
For public awareness and in the interest of transparency, CDC is providing timely updates on the following serious adverse events of interest:
Anaphylaxis after COVID-19 vaccination is rare and has occurred in approximately 2 to 5 people per million vaccinated in the United States. Severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, can occur after any vaccination. If this occurs, vaccination providers can effectively and immediately treat the reaction. Learn more about COVID-19 vaccines and allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis.
Thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS) after Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen (J&J/Janssen) COVID-19 vaccination is rare. As of August 11, 2021, more than 13 million doses of the J&J/Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine have been given in the United States. CDC and FDA identified 42 confirmed reports of people who got the J&J/Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine and later developed TTS. Women younger than 50 years old especially should be aware of the rare but increased risk of this adverse event. There are other COVID-19 vaccine options available for which this risk has not been seen. Learn more about J&J/Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine and TTS.
To date, two confirmed cases of TTS following mRNA COVID-19 vaccination (Moderna) have been reported to VAERS after more than 339 million doses of mRNA COVID-19 vaccines administered in the United States. Based on available data, there is not an increased risk for TTS after mRNA COVID-19 vaccination.
CDC and FDA are monitoring reports of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) in people who have received the J&J/Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine. GBS is a rare disorder where the body’s immune system damages nerve cells, causing muscle weakness and sometimes paralysis. Most people fully recover from GBS, but some have permanent nerve damage. After more than 13 million J&J/Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine doses administered, there have been around 161 preliminary reports of GBS identified in VAERS as of August 11, 2021. These cases have largely been reported about 2 weeks after vaccination and mostly in men, many 50 years and older. CDC will continue to monitor for and evaluate reports of GBS occurring after COVID-19 vaccination and will share more information as it becomes available.
Myocarditis and pericarditis after COVID-19 vaccination are rare. As of August 11, 2021, VAERS has received 1,306 reports of myocarditis or pericarditis among people ages 30 and younger who received COVID-19 vaccine. Most cases have been reported after mRNA COVID-19 vaccination (Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna), particularly in male adolescents and young adults. Through follow-up, including medical record reviews, CDC and FDA have confirmed 762 reports of myocarditis or pericarditis. CDC and its partners are investigating these reports to assess whether there is a relationship to COVID-19 vaccination. Learn more about COVID-19 vaccines and myocarditis.
Reports of death after COVID-19 vaccination are rare. More than 357 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines were administered in the United States from December 14, 2020, through August 16, 2021. During this time, VAERS received 6,789 reports of death (0.0019%) among people who received a COVID-19 vaccine. FDA requires healthcare providers to report any death after COVID-19 vaccination to VAERS, even if it’s unclear whether the vaccine was the cause. Reports of adverse events to VAERS following vaccination, including deaths, do not necessarily mean that a vaccine caused a health problem. A review of available clinical information, including death certificates, autopsy, and medical records, has not established a causal link to COVID-19 vaccines. However, recent reports indicate a plausible causal relationship between the J&J/Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine and TTS, a rare and serious adverse event—blood clots with low platelets—which has caused deaths pdf icon[1.4 MB, 40 pages].

Re: Booster shots
You appear to have a problem with reading comprehension. That tends to happen a lot in cases of motivated reasoning. CDC goes out of its way to make clear that either it's been established the adverse reactions aren't caused by the vaccine (except for anaphylaxis, which can be treated without hospitalization, and a handful of reactions to the J&J vaccine), or that no link has been established and investigation is continuing. Or do you think that if someone dies in a car crash 20 minutes after getting the vaccine, the death should be attributed to the vaccine? --BobEstonut wrote: ↑Wed Aug 18, 2021 10:01 pmThe CDC disagrees with you. Re: Booster shots
And what's your point? No medicine is perfectly safe, just like no food is perfectly safe. It's no surprise that you're going to get reports of people being hospitalized when you've given over 350 million doses of vaccine in the United States in eight months, far more than for any other vaccine, including the annual flu shots, in a comparable period of time. If you listen to any medication commercial on TV, they spend the last half of the commercial reciting warnings about the various potential side effects. You have, as Bob pointed out, a small number of reported adverse results, not all of which can be tied to the vaccine itself. Against that, the chances of death or serious illness from the virus itself is many times higher.

Only anaphylaxis really has any sort of pattern and that is possible with most kinds of medication. You can get a CT scan and get anaphylaxis. Antibiotics do it all the time. Welcome to medicine. I can fix anaphylaxis in five minutes.
Folks take lisinopril and other ACE inhibitors. ACE induced angioedema is more dangerous because you cannot easily fix it. Yet millions of Americans take those medications.
