Cowboy Cal is owned by Bob McNair, the owner of the Houston Texans.
Big Brown is the favorite right now but he drew the #20 starting position. That's tough to win from. Colonel John is in #10 and is the second favorite right now.
I'm going to take Pyro who is at 6-1 right now. No idea why.

You gotta be careful betting on that Pyro. I trained with him for a while. He'll burn you.andrewjackson wrote:Cowboy Cal is owned by Bob McNair, the owner of the Houston Texans.

Don't bet on the Llama
Suitguy is not bitter.
feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive
The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

Funny thing is that Big Brown's owner or trainer must have chosen that position. This year the poll positions were determined by a two-stage process - a "pill pull" to determine the order in which the owners/trainers would select their positions, and then the actual selection. Speculation is that Big Brown's owner wanted to be on the outside to avoid the "rush to the rail" that could prove problematic for the horse.andrewjackson wrote:Cowboy Cal is owned by Bob McNair, the owner of the Houston Texans.

Interesting. #20 is pretty far outside but maybe it will work out.earendel wrote:Funny thing is that Big Brown's owner or trainer must have chosen that position. I looked it up. Big Brown didn't pick until 16th. Obviously there weren't many good picks left by then. 1, 2, 18, 19, or 20 were the only ones left to pick from. Of those, 20 is probably the best. I wouldn't want to be 1 or 2 with this size field.
Draw order and post position pick:
1. Visionaire -8
2. Big Truck - 7
3. Colonel John 10
4. Z Fortune - 6
5. Pyro - 9
6. Eight Belles - 5
7. Anak Nakal - 3
8. Court Vision - 4
9. Z Humor -11
10. Monba -14
11. Smooth Air -12
12. Adriano - 15
13. Bob Black Jack - 13
14. Denis of Cork - 16
15. Cowboy Cal -17
16. Big Brown - 20
17. Tale of Ekati - 2
18. Cool Coal Man - 1
19. Recapturetheglory - 18
20. Gayego - 19
Basically the first 8 filled in the 3-10 positions starting in the middle and working both ways. Which is usually where you want to be. Then the next 7 filled up 11-17. Which are probably better than 1 or 2. That didn't leave too many options for Big Brown or the ones to follow.
No matter where you go, there you are.

Re: AYSTAFG about the Kentucky Derby?
For those who are REALLY in the know, this is wrong. The main gate holds 14 horses. The auxiliary gate holds the remaining six horses. There's no real difference between the two gates, except that the second gate holds the outermost post positions. Several Derby winners have started from the auxiliary gate. In recent years, these have included Monarchos, Fusaichi Pegasus, Charismatic, Grindstone, Thunder Gulch, Swale, and Gato Del Sol.earendel wrote: Well, after yesterday's "pill pull" for post position, Big Brown has been installed as the early favorite at 3-1 even though he will be starting from the 20th position. (For those in the know, this is the last of the regular starting gate slots - any more than 20 and there's an auxiliary gate. No horse has won coming from the auxiliary gate.)

The largest Kentucky Derby field ever was 23 starters in 1974. (I was there. I attended every year from 1969 to 1976, and a few times since then.) Because of safety concerns, the field was capped at a maximum of 20 starters several years ago.

Here is the Kentucky Derby website listing some online site where you can place bets:PlacentiaSoccerMom wrote:How do I bet on a horse. I have never done it before.
This horse is going to win because 13 is one of my favorite numbers and my dad's name was Bob. Is it a black horse?13. Bob Black Jack - 13

I'd guess there are other unofficial sites. You can also go to a lot of tracks and place bets on the Derby.

Kurt's a great guy, but holy cow. He thought I wanted to put my money on CowboyChuck. I think he was confused between BobBlackJack and BigTruck.
All is well. I have Cal; SteelersFan has BB.

Oh well, when the race fans start complaining about the quality of one year's field, that's when I'll make my comeback.
Guess I shoulda kept my mouth shut....
