What's happened to D.C.? I've looked and it doesn't seem like any buildings were burned, cars overturned, innocent people beaten with bricks or that a section of D.C. has been taken over. All in all, probably less violence and damage than in Chicago last Saturday, or next Saturday, or the next.

And it's difficult to say how much of the downturn in business in these other cities is due to the demonstrations and how much is due to the ongoing pandemic. I guess we can thank Donald Trump for that. He told his followers "let's go to the Capitol" instead of "let's go to some urban business district."

I've never defended the rioters in other cities, who were a small percentage of the demonstrators. But we've had right wing rioters storm both the Michigan and U.S. capitol, waving Confederate battle flags and other White Nationalist flags in the rotunda. One policeman was killed inside the Capitol building. A man left pipe bombs outside DNC and RNC headquarters. Another man was arrested with 11 Molotov cocktails in his truck near the Capitol grounds. And they've plotted to kidnap the governor of Michigan and put her on trial for treason. That's straight out of John Wilkes Booth and his fellow conspirators.

We've had a lot of riots in our history, caused by people of all political stripes. Our Capitol has been occupied twice, once by the British in the War of 1812 and two days ago. Which incident will people remember years from now, the rioters in the Capitol or the rioters in Minneapolis?

Secretary of State Raffensperger was hustled out of his office Wednesday for his own safety. Other state capitals were breached as well, at least one with the help of a sitting Republican member of the Legislature. This was insurrection, and should be treated as such. Donny should be charged with inciting an insurrection. One of the penalties for a conviction on those charges is disqualification from holding federal office.

I don't have experience in Portland or Minneapolis (although a survey showed that 60% of Portland residents in October were still in favor of the demonstrations), but I do know a bit about downtown Atlanta. Much of downtown Atlanta remains nearly shut down because of the pandemic. Restaurants and stores have closed, conventions have canceled, sporting events and attractions like the Georgia Aquarium have been scaled way back, businesses are operating remotely. My old offices at the Georgia Lottery are still operating remotely with less than 10% of staff in on any day. My daughter works at one of the largest law firms in Atlnata. She has been to her offices one day since March.

Now if a city like Atlanta has lots of closed stores and restaurants without any significant damage from demonstrations or riots, the economics must be worse in other cities where businesses will have to pay a lot upfront to rebuild or repair in order to open. It's one thing to try to stay open during a pandemic and make enough money to stay afloat. It's another to have to spend tens of thousands before stepping into that very same economic reality.

In a normal year, you wouldn't still see the conditions that still exist in cities like Minndapolis and Portland.
