RIP Sean Connery

I watched The Untouchables again recently and he was superb--deserving of the Oscar he got. He defined Bond in a way that made it very difficult for those who followed...maybe not until Daniel Craig did anyone really embrace and take ownership of the role.

He also never got to see his dream of Scottish independence realized...I suspect that had he lived for a couple more years, he'd have gotten there.

RIP, 007.

My biggest regret about Connery (and Gene Hackman as well, who is still alive) is that they retired at a time when they could have given us several more memorable films. Jimmy Cagney did the same thing, retiring for over 20 years before agreeing to return in Ragtime.

Connery could have had his pick of virtually any older male role in the last two decades.

But he was a terrific actor and he made the 007 franchise what it is today.

When I first saw Skyfall, I wondered if the part played by Albert Finney had been originally written for Connery who refused to come out of retirement for it.

I was crazy about Sean Connery. You would have thought that he would have played a big part in my dreams, but somehow he never showed. Instead, I did have lots of espionage dreams, but they all happened locally with local players. How international espionage translated into a podunk town in Colorado -- well, that's the nature of dreams. I doubt it would have happened if I hadn't been so entranced with Connery.

To me Sean Connery IS James Bond and the others are but imitations. That said, he did have a few clunkers in his career, most notably Zardoz. I liked him in Darby O'Gill and the Little People (he sings!).

Much as I loved him as Bond and some of his other roles, I can't quite get over the infamous Playboy interview where he said it was ok to hit a woman as long as you use an open hand.

And, now that I think about it, in the era of the Me Too movement, I'm a bit surprised more isn't being made of this...kind of a massive look-the-other-way reaction because we loved him so much.
