Hey, Panic & Melly!
Just out of curiosity, where had you heard of the Trung sisters before?
My cousin's in-laws.
My cousin Marge's son Doug married Bao Quyen, whose parents were/are Vietnamese refugees.
While they were dating, we had a series of family get-togethers (since Marge and I are part of 25 cousins on TLAF'S side and Quyen's extended family is almost as huge). Marge and I are particularly close and TLAF and I went to a couple of them.
Quyen's grandparents are mesmerizing storytellers. The story of the Two Sisters Rebellion and jumping in the river rather than surrender really stuck with me.
Thanks for the response, Melly!
I have worked with and socialized with many Vietnamese people over the years, but had never heard of these sisters. I was guessing you and Panic either had visited Vietnam and heard it, or had read it in some book about Vietnamese history. I hadn't even thought of hearing about them from an actual Vietnamese storyteller. Cool!
Vandal, I had meant to ask you, too, but assumed you had heard of them from your "Dragon Song" co-author. Is that right?
A child of five would understand this. Send someone to fetch a child of five.

I had only heard of them while researching famous siblings for this challenge.

Esto - if it hadn’t been for that, I’d never have known.
When I was writing for City of Philadelphia’s Department of Behavioral Health, I worked with some of the Southeast Asian communities on phrasing for outreach materials.
Got some great Vietnamese recipes, but no stories.
