Lyrically Speaking: Tuesday's Titles

#1 Post by astrnomr » Tue Apr 29, 2008 10:06 am

It has been a busy morning, so I'll get around to scoring Monday's quiz after lunch. However, without further ado, here is today's quiz. These songs all have something fairly obvious in common.

1. Well calling it your job, ol' hoss, sure don't make it right
But if you want me to, I'll say a prayer for your soul tonight

2. Won't you look down upon me, Jesus
You've got to help me make a stand
You've just got to see me through another day

3. I love to hear the thunder
Watch the lightning
When it lights up the sky
You know it makes me feel good

4. Though your hurt is gone, mine's hanging on, inside
And I know it's eating me through every night and day
I'm just waiting on your sign

5. I'm out of work, I'm out of my head
Out of self respect, I'm out of bread
I'm underloved, I'm underfed
I wanna go home

6. I want to breathe in the open wind
I want to kiss like lovers do
I want to dive into your ocean

7. I know it's hard to keep an open heart
When even friends seem out to harm you
But if you could heal a broken heart
Wouldn't time be out to charm you

8. C'mon you little fighter
No need to get uptighter
C'mon you little fighter
And get back up again

9. You said you didn't need her
You told her good-bye (good-bye)
You sacrificed a good love
To satisfy your pride

10.Funny but it seems I always wind up here with you
It's nice to know somebody loves me
Funny but it seems that it's the only thing to do
To run and find the one who loves me

Bonus: Identify today's theme.

Double Bonus: What special item did the band in song #9 earn, and why were they forced to give it back?

Final Bonus: What name did the artist of song #1 go by for his first few albums?

Bonus 1 - Rain
Bonus 2 - Best New Artist Grammy. They had to give it back because it was revealed that they didn't actually sing the songs on their album. An album I have, embarrassingly enough. Actually, I think some of the songs do hold up quite well, regardless of who is singing.
Bonus 3 - In the beginning, he was Johnny Cougar. For his breakthrough album, American Fool, it was shortened to John Cougar. By the time Scarecrow came out in 1985ish, it was John Cougar Mellencamp. Shortly after that he became simply John Mellencamp. Staying with the theme of getting closer to his family roots, he is now known as Hans Mehlenkampf.

Bonus: Identify today's theme.
Rain. I also accepted "weather" or "precipitation".

Double Bonus: What special item did the band in song #9 earn, and why were they forced to give it back?
They won the Grammy Award for "Best New Artist" in 1990. After it was revealed that the duo of Fab Morvan and Rob Pilatus were nothing more than a pair of lip-synching pretenders chosen only for their looks and dance moves (because the real singers apparently weren't "marketable"), they were forced to return the award.

Final Bonus: What name did the artist of song #1 go by for his first few albums?
Record executive Tony DeFries thought his name needed to be flashier, so he used Mellencamp's middle name to create "Johnny Cougar", which was eventually shortened to "John Cougar". Mellencamp detested it, and once he became successful enough, he ditched the stage name and reverted back to his real name.
