Ruth Is Stranger Than Friction

If this was a Hollywood script, it would be rejected out of hand, but it actually happened last night in the NHL. The Carolina Hurricanes played the Toronto Maple Leafs in Toronto and won 6-3. That's not the story. NHL teams carry two goaltenders, and both Carolina goalies were injured. Under NHL rules, there is a designated backup goalie in the arena for this eventuality (available for both teams's use). In this case it was David Ayres, a 42-year-old Zamboni driver and maintenance worker for Toronto's minor league affiliate. Ayers entered the game halfway through with Carolina up 3-1. Toronto scored on its next two shots, but Ayres settled down and Carolina went on to win 6-3. Ayres' own hockey career ended 15 years earlier when he received a kidney transplant from his mother. He was paid $500 for the game (and got to keep his jersey and a whole lot of other swag from his temporary teammates).

This wouldn't have been a script before, but I'm sure there are already several screenwriters working on the project.

So I guess hockey isn't on board with the concept of the two way player? Make the hulking backup enforcer put on the pads...

I hope not. I'm sure several producers are trying to option Ayres's life rights, but any scriptwriter who is writing a spec script will be disappointed.
