Harvard student denied entry to US

#1 Post by Bob78164 » Wed Aug 28, 2019 10:54 am

I read this story in today's Los Angeles Times. An incoming freshman at Harvard, student visa in hand, was denied entry to the country to begin his studies. He plans to major in chemical and physical biology.

When he arrived at Logan Airport in Boston, immigration authorities asked him about his religion and then spent hours poring through his social media accounts after seizing his phone and computer. They decided they didn't like the opinions people on his friends list were posting about the United States, and on that basis refused to honor his visa by admitting him to the country.

I'm guessing, by the way, that the student's name, origin, and appearance probably had more than a little to do with the scrutiny he received. His name is Ismael Ajjawi.

In a normal world this would be horrifying. Let's not let this become the new normal. --Bob

I agree. I hope that it is never normal that educated people reach opinions on important issues based on one side of the story.

We have seen two years of Donny's racism in action at the border. At this point the burden of proof is on the government. I don't trust my government's good faith in this arena. They need to prove it. --Bob

Huh. Exactly how I feel about them 'providing' for my healthcare.

That's actually kind of funny coming from a public employee whose health insurance is presumably paid for by her government employer. --Bob

Gee, if only there were an open marketplace, or exchange, where you could find a policy more to your liking. Or an option to buy into Medicare now instead of having to wait until you're 65. --Bob

He's in. And he made it in time for the start of classes. --Bob
