Today's Final Jeopardy

I haven't been watching the show much this season other then when Holzhauer was on his run, but apparently there's a fairly new rule that if two players are tied at the end of Final Jeopardy, there's a one-question buzzoff to determine the champion.

The 1-day champion went into Final Jeopardy with $19,600 and his closest challenger had $9,800. In past years, this would be a no-brainer. The runnerup would bet everything, the champ would bet nothing and there would be co-champions. This time however, the champion did the same thing with the same result. Both players got it right, but the challenger won the buzzoff.

I've got to think that unless I absolutely hated the FJ category, I would rather take my chances on getting FJ right (or my opponent missing) than in beating someone to the buzzer one time. So I would bet $1 (or if I was Holzhauer, as much as I could and still freeze out the third-place finisher). I'd rather trust my mental faculties than my buzzer speed on a single question. (I can't imagine Ken Jennings or Holzhauer betting $0 on FJ in this situation)

The odds favored him trying to win it in FJ! The guy who won was a strong challenger on the signaling device throughout the game. He should have done it.

And it turned out to be such a relatively easy FJ too. But maybe he really really hated the category.

I was surprised by this and yes, it was an easy question with the ringing in on the buzzer the deciding factor.
