What a weird name

#1 Post by ghostjmf » Wed May 08, 2019 10:12 am

*Archie*?

Not even "Archer" or whatever.

I hope the other kids are kind; if not, the royals will have them shot.

At least it wasn't Alfie.

I have an Archie grandson. It suits him perfectly.

Anybody up on the most recent Van Morrison album, "The Prophet Speaks", knows that the ventriloquist's dummy Mr. Morrison is shushing on the cover was named Archie in a famous-to-Britons TV show, "Educating Archie".

Of course that show was well before Prince Harry's time.

Short for Archibald? --Bob

nope, they didn't say "short for anything". Could be, but they didn't say.

At least he's far enough down the chain of succession that we shouldn't have "King Archie." Of course, I suppose he could change his name at coronation, which has been done before.

Besides, Archie doesn't wear a crown, Jughead does. :P

I looked up famous Archies and most are short for Archibald, including Archibald Leach, a Brit who made rather a good name for himself (albeit under another name). One "real" Archie is former football player Archie Griffin.

So you'd expect his regnant name to be King Jughead? --Bob

I think the more interesting thing is the choice of last name. First they get to chose a last name.

And also surprised that Spencer was not part of the names at all. I was hoping that it was going to be the first name.

According to Wikipedia, the surname Mountbatten-Windsor was created in 1960, but Archie is the first to have it with no title of nobility (Earl, Princess, Lady etc.).

My understanding is that they wanted to name him Manning Marvin Markle Mountbatten, but ended up having to tweak it a bit to please Her Majesty.

Or I could have just made it up....

Fun Fact: Rather than going by HRH, the Princess Royal goes by Anne Mountbatten (no hypenate because she's cool like that...).

Oh, those nutty Saxe-Coburg Gothae....

Actually, they wanted to name him Jughead but Queen Liz overruled them.
