random musing

#1 Post by earendel » Wed Mar 27, 2019 12:56 pm

Has anyone else noticed that the "cent" sign no longer appears on keyboards? It was on typewriter keyboards just to the right of the semicolon. I wonder why it disappeared.

Good question. It is a needed symbol. It just doesn't make cents.

I googled it - it's an interesting read. Just my $.02.

You work for the federal govt, right? You must have recently replaced your typewriters. The cent sign isn't on computer keyboards. ;)

Does anyone use a typewriter any more? Does anyone know what a typewriter is any more?

Maybe back in your day... but on the typewriters that were still around when I was a kid in the 80's (Heck, I had an electric in the 90's) the cent sign was Shift-6. I had noticed back then that it had been replaced by the caret on computer keyboards... and I'm wondering if computer keyboards ever even had the cent sign on them.

Noticed it years ago, just figured with inflation there wasn't much use for the symbol, while there would still be use to write out the word.

I know. I was just wondering when it stopped appearing and why. t-girl suggested Googling, so I did, and she's right. It's an interesting read.

Thank you for bringing this up and to T for suggesting the Google. I had no idea where it had gone or that it actually existed in several spots on the typewriter layout. Here is what you remember:

And here is what I recall on the more recent generation of typewriters:

What I found online also mentioned how the cent sign has largely disappeared from life today which is why most people never noticed it was missing from keyboards. Having worked at Mecca for two decades now, I didn't realize this since out store is full of cent signs because we still use them on our shelf labels and pricing signs...

The second one is what I remember - I think I've probably seen the first one, but haven't used one. No comments from the whippersnapper gallery.
