Happy Anniversary, Mars Rovers!
Today marks the fifth anniversary of the first Mars Rover, Spirit, landing on Mars. Both Spirit and Opportunity remain in service, even though their missions were originally planned to last only 90 days.
NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory has put together a neat little video to celebrate this occasion:

I actually thought about this yesterday since I remembered it was 5 years ago last night I went to the ER for my kidney stone, and spent the entire next day in the hospital. I recall this and some story about Britney Spears marriage from the news I watched while confined to a hospital bed.....

The rovers continue to produce amazing pictures and perform good science. If only there were some way to blow off the dust cover that builds up on their solar panels they might well go for even longer. However they still have a ways to go before breaking the longevity record for Mars probes. I'll award 600 bogus points each for the record and the craft that holds it.MarleysGh0st wrote:Today marks the fifth anniversary of the first Mars Rover, Spirit, landing on Mars. We'll just have to send Matt Damon out there to science the shit out of it and get it running again. --Bobjarnon wrote:RIP Opportunity rover, after 15 years

Sad Face has a distinction that's probably not unique, but it is rare. It made Page One at least one of the supermarket tabloids AND the local paper. The Face on Mars wrote:*sad face*

Re: Happy Anniversary, Mars Rovers!
Since you dug up a ten-year-old thread of mine for this occasion, I suppose I should add to it...with some help from XKCD.
