I don't know how anyone can say that the Mr. Rogers documentary wasn't one of the five best of the year.

Some reviewers had it as their favorite overall film of the year. I am baffled by its exclusion.

Also baffled by the exclusion of Three Identical Strangers.

Best picture

"A Star Is Born”
“Roma”
“Green Book”
“The Favourite”
“Black Panther"
“BlacKkKlansman"
“Bohemian Rhapsody” <-- Only one I've seen. But I'll bet ASIB wins based on comments from friends.
“Vice”

Best actor

Christian Bale, “Vice”
Bradley Cooper, “A Star Is Born”
Rami Malek, “Bohemian Rhapsody” <-- Again, only one I saw. I think he did a good job but
Viggo Mortensen, “Green Book” <-- Viggo gets my wager
Willem Dafoe, “At Eternity’s Gate”

Best actress

Yalitza Aparicio, “Roma”
Glenn Close, “The Wife”
Olivia Colman, “The Favourite”
Lady Gaga, “A Star Is Born”
Melissa McCarthy, “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” <-- I put all my money on she doesn't win. I can never forgive her for the crap that is her body of work.

Supporting actor <-- No idea

Mahershala Ali, “Green Book”
Sam Elliott, “A Star Is Born”
Adam Driver, “BlacKkKlansman”
Richard E. Grant, “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”
Sam Rockwell, “Vice”

Supporting actress

Amy Adams, “Vice”
Marina de Tavira, “Roma”
Regina King, “If Beale Street Could Talk”
Emma Stone, “The Favourite” <-- My choice because I only know of one other (Adams) and I don't like her. At all.
Rachel Weisz, “The Favourite”

Directing

Alfonso Cuaron, “Roma”
Spike Lee, “BlacKkKlansman”
Pawel Pawlikowski, “Cold War”
Yorgos Lanthimos, “The Favourite” <-- Him, because I like the name, Yorgos, Yorgos, Yorgos!
Adam McKay, “Vice”

Adapted screenplay

“The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” (Joel Coen and Ethan Coen) <-- Saw half. The first segment (Buster Scruggs) was the best. It went downhill from there. Not sure which one we bailed on.
“BlacKkKlansman” (Charlie Wachtel, David Rabinowitz, Kevin Willmott and Spike Lee)
“Can You Ever Forgive Me?” (Nicole Holofcenerand Jeff Whitty)
“If Beale Street Could Talk” (Barry Jenkins)
“A Star Is Born” (Eric Roth, Bradley Cooper and Will Fetters) <-- This one will win.

Original screenplay <-- No clue, just not Vice.

“The Favourite” (Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara)
“First Reformed” (Paul Schrader)
“Green Book” (Nick Vallelonga, Brian Currie and Peter Farrelly)

“Incredibles 2” <-- Only one I saw. It was "O.K.". I heard IOD was good.
“Isle of Dogs”
“Mirai”
“Ralph Breaks the Internet”
“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”

Original song (goes to writer)

“When A Cowboy Trades His Spurs For Wings” from “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” (David Rawlings and Gillian Welch) <-- Second choice. This one was good, too.
“All The Stars” from “Black Panther” (Kendrick Lamar, Top Dawg and SZA )
“I’ll Fight” from “RBG” (Diane Warren)
“The Place Where Lost Things Go” from “Mary Poppins Returns”(Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman) <-- This will win. Good song.
“Shallow” from “A Star Is Born” (Lady Gaga, Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando and Andrew Wyatt)

Original score

Ludwig Goransson, “Black Panther”
Terence Blanchard, ”BlacKkKlansman”
Nicholas Britell, ”If Beale Street Could Talk”
Alexandre Desplat, ”Isle of Dogs”
Marc Shaiman, ”Mary Poppins Returns” <-- Only one I saw, so it gets my vote.

Foreign-language film

“Never Look Away” (Germany)
"Shoplifters” (Japan)
“Capernaum” (Lebanon)
“Roma” (Mexico)
"Cold War" (Poland)

Documentary feature

“Free Solo” <- If this is about Red Solo Cups, it wins. If not, then something else will.

“Minding the Gap”

When it comes to movies, I definitely fall into the "layman" category. Watch a lot of 'em, but not with a movie critic's eye. Just want to be entertained. That being said, every year my son and I have tried to watch every film nominated for the major Oscar categories. I figured that, judging by the other awards given out so far, that "Roma" would get a Best Picture nod (I figured correctly). Since it's on Netflix, I thought I'd get a jump on things and watch it.

Well....

Spoiler Alert not needed because in this movie, NOTHING FRIKKIN' HAPPENS.

Well ok, one thing happens, but that's it. At least as far as I know. I fell asleep a couple of times and had to go back to the scene I last remembered being awake for. So maybe a couple of things happened while I was in the zoning out process. I'm not willing to try again. As far as I'm concerned, this is one of those lushly shot "character studies". I suppose the tedium is part of the point in examining the lives of these characters. I also understand that this is a very personal film for the director. But for me, this movie was a 2-hour sleeping pill. In fact, I'm nodding off just thinking about it. I felt the same way about "Moonlight" 2 years ago...and that had a LITTLE more happening than "Roma"...and "Moonlight" won Best Picture.

Uh-oh.

You're using it wrong. The term is not for someone a millennium old, but someone born in this millennium.

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs looks enticingly odd.

It's a Netflix film from the Coen Brothers. And that Oscar nominated song from the movie is hilarious.

I hope they lose and lose BIG. They need to focus their energies where it really matters....getting the next season of Fargo in the can.

There seems to be more buzz for this crop of nominees, though not all of it is good. It seems like people have a visceral, frothing hatred for Green Book and Bohemian Rhapsody.

Free Solo is a documentary on one of the greatest athletic feats ever. Alex Honnold climbed El Capitan at Yosemite without using any equipment except for chalk on his hands. One mistake and he dies. i recommend seeing it.

The first segment is fairly witty (it's an anthology with six completely separate stories). Some of the rest are extremely grim, especially the one with Liam Neson.

There are only six? I must have made it through 4 1/2. Maybe I should finish.

Really? What's their beef? I don't read a lot of reviews or stuff, but I thought Bohemian Rhapsody killed it! I've only seen three of the Best Picture nominees, but that was definitely the standout of the year for me. I also really liked The Favourite.

Cinemark is doing a thing to see all of the Oscar nominees the week before the ceremony for $32. I'm thinking of doing it because I wouldn't mind seeing those two again and I would like to see Star is Born and Green Book (I saw the trailer for that one when we went to see BoRhap and it looked mildly interesting).

Justice Department Warns Academy Over Potential Oscar Rule Changes Threatening Netflix

The issue is films like Roma that appeared an Netflix just three weeks after their theatrical release. Several large cinema chains in America and Mexico refused to show it. Reminds me of movie theaters' "Save Free TV" campaign in the '60s. Their real concern was cable TV's impact on movie attendance, of course.

A movie like Roma was never going to get a wide release no matter what, but what Regal and AMC did was refuse to show Roma during their Oscar marathons that they traditionally do just before the Academy Awards where they show all the Oscar nominated films over the course of one weekend. Roma was excluded. Of course, Black Panther was included even though it had been out on home video for months already.

The big issue isn't Roma, because I don't think that a whole lot of people were going to subscribe to Netflix to see Roma, no matter how many Oscars it won. The big issue is Martin Scorsese's The Irishman, which will probably get a lot of Oscar attention next year (the cast includes DeNiro, Pacino, Pesci, Keitel, and others). Theaters will want to show The Irishman if Netflix makes it available, but conversely if Netflix can restrict showings to the bare minimum under Oscar rules, it will be a big incentive for people to subscribe to Netflix.

Spielberg isn't exactly playing with clean hands here. He's invested in Apple TV, which will be a Netflix competitor that focuses on TV (Netflix and Amazon Prime series do well at the Emmys), so it's in his interest to avoid giving Netflix too big an advantage. It's funny how no one complained when Netflix starting showing those Adam Sandler movies.
