Long Night in San Diego

#1 Post by silverscreenselect » Fri Apr 18, 2008 11:45 am

In a game that didn't end until nearly 4:30 in the morning eastern time, the Colorado Rockies beat the San Diego Padres 2-1 in 22 innings. It was the longest game either team ever played and the longest in the majors in 15 years.

Ironically, the game could have ended much earlier when Colorado scored in the 14th inning to take a 1-0 lead, but San Diego tied it in the bottom of the 14th. The two catchers each played the entire game, which involved 15 pitchers.

If I were a betting man, I'd bet on their opponents in tonight's games, especially the 'Rockies who are flying into Houston.

Who'd have guessed Merry Men outfielder Brad Hawpe would go 22 innings without getting a damn hit....

Interestingly, Kip Wells got the win. One of the few wins he got last year was on the tail end of the 14 inning game I was at last year, so he seems to have finally found his niche as extra innings mop-up man....

Three runs in 22 innings.

That's a cricket match.
I am about 25% sure of this.

Average number of goals per game in MLS this season- 3.2

And that's in games that last two hours, max.

Wrong about cricket as well. Most cricket matches are two innings and they usually score about 100 runs an inning.

On Wednesday, Pakistan beat Bangladesh, 212 to 210, and they didn't even have to finish the first inning.
No matter where you go, there you are.

Brings back Memories of doing the Box Score at Angels Stadium. I had a Sunday afternoon game that Ran 17 innings. In the Bottom of the 14th inning they brought the guest singer back on the field to sing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" for the second time that day.
Darn it was so hard fitting all of those statistics into those little boxes. :?

You sure that was 17 innings?

I was going to try to be cute and post the box score for that game, but a quick glance of Retrosheet's game logs show that the Angels have only played 4 games of exactly 17 innings in their existence. Two occured on the road, and both of the others were on Tuesdays.

Well, you would have lost the "juice". Colorado won and San Diego lost. (assuming you bet that both would lose.
