Not being a fan of the excessive vocalizing of Mariah Carey, this was every bit the crapfest to my ears that I expected. This may have been my least favorite "Idol" ever. One of 'em, anyway.

1-David A. "When You Believe". Good tone, nice sustained note a third of the way in, in key throughout. A bit overblown at the end, though. A-

2-Jason "I Don't Wanna Cry". Vocal was a bit strained in a couple of spots. Nothing terrible, just kinda bland. B-

3-Carly-"Without You'. I don't think I've ever heard Mariah's version, for which I am guessing is a good thing for me, as this will always be Harry Nilsson's song in my book (even though it was originally written and recorded by Badfinger). It is now apparent to me that Carly is not particularly proficient at improvising. Her vocal runs were not very impressive, and her "power vocals" sounded too much like "yelling" on occasion to me. Well, she wasn't offkey, at least. B-

4-David C. "Always Be My Baby". Great arrangement, mediocre performance. Too bad--this coulda been terrific. Don't know how the judges missed all those bum notes, unless MY ears needed adjustment. I'd buy this version if it was sung better. C-

5-Syesha "Vanishing". Well, after showing remarkable restraint the past few weeks, Syesha just couldn't hold back anymore. After a nice first verse sung with real emotion, the rest of the song was overblown crap..She spent the rest of the song trying to impress us with her vocal skills. Unfortunately, her "skills" are not impressive enough to get as free with the vocal acrobatics as she did. C-

6-Brooke "Hero". I appreciated the simplicity of the arrangement. I appreciated the lack of vocal histrionics. I did not appreciate the frequent bum notes so much. D+

7-Kristy Lee "Forever". Mariah said that Kristy Lee singing this in rehearsal "gave her goosebumps". Her singing this on the show gave me a similar reaction, although I call it "making my skin crawl". Flat out terrible. I lost track of all the bad notes. But since she didn't attempt any foolish vocal runs, I'll raise her half a grade................. D-

If I could be guaranteed that next week would be the week when Andrew Lloyd Webber is the mentor, I'd actually root for Kristy Lee to survive this week's vote. The thought of her tackling something from "Phantom of the Opera" fills me with a perverse glee. What a laugh riot that would be!!

I wouldn't be surprised if ANY of the ladies go home, but I have a feeling that Brooke may be in trouble.

Standings:

1-David A 82 pts.
2-Jason 79 pts.
3-Carly-77 pts.
4-David c 71 pts.
5-Syesha 70 pts.
6-Brooke 62 pts
7-Kristy Lee 36 pts.

I did not know tonight was going to be a Mariah night until Ryan announced it. So, it was a little funny for me because after hearing the judges say time and time again that taking on a Mariah song was "too big for them" I did not feel any of these contestants had the pipes to blow out a Mariah song without making some changes and molding it into their own style. My other problem is that I do not know much of the Mariah material after the first album or two when she started do hip-hop or whatever they call that style. I just don't care for it. That said, I was pleasantly surprised by half the performers - even for the songs I did not know.

I completely agreed with Simon in that, IMO, the guys just completely overshadowed the girls tonight. David Cook was simply outstanding (again - even though I did not know the song he sang) and I, once again, enjoyed Jason's rendition of one of my favorite Mariah early songs. It was almost an A performance and I would like to hear him do the entire song. David A. did as well as I expected but his performances are, like Melinda's last year, very predictable. Good but predictable and I am beginning to wonder if David C. might snatch the win this year. While his voice is not as technically as good as David A.'s he get many more points on stage presence and originality.

None of the girls were bad, in my opinion, and I could have liked Carly more had she done Without You with a little more restraint.

I will, again, go with the ousting of the one I picked last week - Syesha although I would not be surprised if either Carly or Kristy left. I think all the guys are safe this week.

7-Kristy Lee 36 pts.

Can't disagree with much of the above, especially the "crapfest" comment.

One quibble: yes, David C. hit a few bum notes, but I think it was a little more forgivable than, say, Kristy's awfulness simply because the arrangement allowed for it. I actually enjoyed his performance, bum notes and all, more than anyone else's....especially the horribly overrated David A.'s.

And I really hope it's Kristy's turn to go home, rather than Brooke's...I didn't think she was as bad as they made it seem.

I felt bad for Brooke, who was trembling by the end of her song. Or else it really was that the VCR head needed to be cleaned. But I didn't notice anything like that with other contestants.

I liked David and Jason, and the first half of Syesha's song. I hate the song "Hero," but was willing to give Brooke a pass until she blew a few notes and then speeded up to try to put some distance from them.

The guys are safe, and maybe Carly, though she hasn't been awesome in several weeks. At least they have stopped pimping her, so there is little backlash vote against her.

MJ's votes go to David Cook, most of them (a few to Jason); I was touched by his grasping how great it was Paula and them said he could make a record right now. He could. He captures this dark, not-quite-grunge but whatever the angst is nowadays for rockers. I don't know if his album would hold up for years, but for right now, he would indeed be perfect for a soundtrack for a teen movie.

I fell alseep before Jason had his turn. I was bored, bored and then bored.

I don't have a favorite, as I have in all previous years. I am not excited about anyone.

I will pick a fave, just so I can have a horse in the race.

It won't be David A. I just can't get the guy.

I do not care who goes home.

I think it will be Brooke. She has not stepped up to own that she deserves to be here or belongs on that stage.

A night full of songs that violate the Whitney/Mariah/Celine/George Michael rule. Yippee. Maybe we can have them take on opera next week while we're at it.

I also noticed Brooke's trembling once they zoomed in on her face. I think nerves contributed to her occasional off note and the pacing of the song, but I still liked this performance probably more than any of the other songs she's done all season. Then again, I haven't really liked anything she's done besides "You're So Vain", so that's not saying a lot.

David Cook did a nice power ballad makeup of a song that I detest. (Well, I pretty much detest everything Mariah sings.) This was my favorite performance of the night, and a hell of a lot better than last week's mess.

I thought Carly did a nice job with the Nilsson song (screw Mariah, it's not her song!), restraining herself instead of hitting every note with a sledgehammer like she usually does. However, the judges gave it a mixed review, and she went early, so that's not a good combination. She still needs to define herself as the power rocker that Amanda Overmyer wanted to be, and then she could be successful.

David A and Syesha, while both technically good singers, have become bland and boring to me because they can only do one type of song without falling apart. If I went to see either in concert, I'd be bored out of my skull after a couple of songs. There's no variety to what they do.

The judges loved Jason, but I still don't get him. He has no vocal range, a vacant stare on every performance, and nobody would vote for him if he didn't have those dreadlocks. I still don't think he will ever have a successful music career. I think he has an excellent chance to become the next Justin Guarini.

Kristy's singing was nice... not thrilling, but nice. She tried to hit some big notes at the end, but her big notes aren't anything close to most of the other competitors who remain.

For the bottom three, I'm picking Carly, Syesha, and Kristy. I think time has finally run out on Kristy.

I am afraid that my fave Brooke will be going home tonight, dang. As Paula would say "she moved me". :D Well, I just like her best of what is remaining.

I still want to puke and puke big time every time David C. is shown. I think the "love" that he is getting reminds me why I am not a music fan. I am not saying that those of you that like him are wrong, you just don't see him or hear him like I do. Nothing wrong with either opinion, that is all they are--opinions.

I haven't watched one minute of this season.

Oh wait, I take that back. I watched a couple of the audition shows, but I haven't seen anything since they went to Hollywood.

Spoiler time!
Spoiler
KLC finally ran out of luck. And the guy who bought her horse won't sell it back!

Both Idol-related websites, Dialidol and Vote For the Worst, took a bath this evening. Dialidol predicted Kristy Lee safe though could be in bottom 3. VFTW has been for KLC since Amanda's ouster.

Meanwhile, I thought Syesha would finally go. Unless Brooke continues to struggle, Syesha now stands out as the weakest.

The show itself was a total waste of an hour. I don't so much mind Mariah Carey as the fact her songs are mostly crap with a bunch of vocal gymnastics piled on top. She can do them, and no one else better try.

David A sings an inspirational ballad. BFD. Surprise, surprise.

Carly sheds her desperation, then sings a song that is all about desperation. I can't compare it to Mariah's version, because it it a Nilsson song and always will be. If Carly would sing Nilsson's You're Breakin' My Heart to Simon I would vote for her until they pried the phone out of my hand.

Syesha was technically good, and boring.

Brooke was technically sucky, and boring.

Kristy Lee was so off at the beginning she could barely save the end, which she did.

David C was flat and monotonous for the first three-quarters of the song. But not so boring. Dude seriously needs to find an iron and a razor, stat.

Jason was Jason. Thank goodness he didn't try to move. Not so great on the singing, but entertaining in his Jason way.

I'm actually bummed Kristy Lee is gone. How sick is that? I'd rather put up with her than Syesha who is a much better singer but brings nothing to the entertainment table.

And, Elliott! Still love the kid because he loved his mom so much.

How great would that be?? LOL! Of course, it would lose some in the translation with the bleeps, but WE'D know, wouldn't we!!

I have mixed emotions. I have wanted her gone for weeks, but I can't help but mourn the loss of what could've been one of Idol's most unintentionally hilarious moments next week...the laugh riot that would be Kristy Lee taking on an Andrew Lloyd Webber song ("the Phaaaaaaaaaaantom of the Opry is tharrrrrrrr....insahd my mahhhhhnd!")

I admit..I have never forgiven her for "Eight Days a Week".

And, Elliott! Still love the kid because he loved his mom so much.
Even though Taylor was my favorite that year, I would not have been upset if Elliott had won. His was the best pure voice that season AND he was a true amateur..no experience singing in front of an audience, no recording history..he went from behind a pharmacy counter to the biggest tv show in the country. I wish him nothing but well in his career.

What do they call the genre of music that Mariah's song was last night. Is is hip-hop, pop or what? It was boring as hell but I am curious as to what category of song you would put it.

I would have rather seen Syesha gone than Kristy. While neither of them bring anything to the performance table at least Kristy had a sense of humor and, IMO, a likability factor. But, like T-Bone, I think her rendition of Eight Days a Week belongs in the AI Hall of Shame.

A rose by any other name would smell as sweet. Crap, by any other name, would stink as bad.

I would definitely be the wrong guy to ask about hip-hop. My granddaughter still can't make me understand the difference between rap and hip-hop. I am too old, too dense, and too unappreciative of the genres.

To tell you the truth, I changed the channel about 10 seconds into the song until she was done. Once she started in with those stupid fluttery hand gestures (which she has been doing for 746 years and drives me absolutely batsh*t) I was interested in checking the Yankees/Red Sox score.
