Lyricsally Speaking: Mystery Puzzle

#1 Post by astrnomr » Wed Apr 16, 2008 7:36 am

Today's quiz doesn't have a literal theme so much as it's more of a Tangredi - a mystical theme that binds everything together, and everything makes sense once (or "if") you figure it out. I will give you a little hint in that accuracy will be important, so cover versions may not be acceptable according to the theme. As an added hint, everything is in order. (That is, Tangredi pairings are consecutive.) Got that? Too bad, here we go anyway.

1. And as I hung up the phone, it occurred to me
He'd grown up just like me
My boy was just like me

2. Well you need a blue sky holiday
The point is they laugh at what you say
And I don't need no carryin' on

3. The only sound that you will hear
Is when I whisper in your ear
I love you forever and ever

4. And I hear it's tight
Most ev'ry night
But now I might be mistaken
Hmm, hmm, hmm, hmm

5. Got laid off down at the fact'ry
And their timing's not the greatest in the world
Heaven knows I been working hard
Wanted Christmas to be right for daddy's girl

6. Come on baby don't you be so shy
You know that I love you let me tell you why
You got a heart I know that it's true
I couldn't love you any more than I do

7. Hatty told Matty
"Let's don't take no chance
Let's not be L-seven
Come and learn to dance"

8. I'd be happy just to hear your voice
Saying this is for the girl who didn't sign her name
Yes, she needs a dedication just the same

9. Now I've drunk a lot of wine and I'm feeling fine
Got to race some cat to bed
Oh is there concrete all around
Or is it in my head?

10. A dragon lives forever, but not so little boys
Painted wings and giant rings make way for other toys

Bonus: Identify today's Tangredi theme.

Double Bonus: If you've figured out the theme, you should have five Tangredi-formed answers. (4 points each. SWAGs where you have at least one component will be accepted. Blanket WAGs will not.)

Final Bonus: In song #7, what did they mean by "L-seven"?

You're kidding, right? If not, let me try to explain it this way -- this isn't a literal theme like yesterday's "numbers in the titles" theme. This is more of a puzzle, and you have to figure out how to put the pieces together. Kind of like those "magic eye" pictures where you either stare at it until you see a 3-D picture appear or you go cross-eyed trying.

Paul McCartney also uses the term in his song C Moon, a big hit in England when I lived there as a boy (and one of my favorite McCartney tunes), but merely the B side to Hi, Hi, Hi over here in the States.

Another confession from a clueless Joe. I wasn't around in the early days and I don't even know where the GC is. I have not been quite able to understand the Tangredi concept. I have not really seen one fully answered, so I have no example from which to learn.

I know just about all the lyrics, BUT what is the name of the song? Is it There's A Kind Of Hush and as far as artist - The Carpenters did it, but there was also some British Invasion band, I think. Freddy And The Dreamers maybe?

I'm not even going to waste electronic ink copying this to answer two of them. Sigh.

#1 is Cat's in the Cradle, Harry Chapin

#10 is Puff the Magic Dragon? Peter, Paul and Mary

#3 looks familiar.

I wouldn't know a Tangredi if it fell on me, and I assume I need a heck of a lot more than two answers to get one.

I could have totally gotten the first four if I wasn't rushing! Although I didn't know the title of #4. But it was going to be no win on the game or puzzle or whatever the bonus was, so whatever.

2. Well you need a blue sky holiday
The point is they laugh at what you say
And I don't need no carryin' on
Daniel Powter - Bad Day

3. The only sound that you will hear
Is when I whisper in your ear
I love you forever and ever
Herman's Hermits - There's a Kind of Hush All Over the World

4. And I hear it's tight
Most ev'ry night
But now I might be mistaken
Hmm, hmm, hmm, hmm
ZZ Top - La Grange

5. Got laid off down at the fact'ry
And their timing's not the greatest in the world
Heaven knows I been working hard
Wanted Christmas to be right for daddy's girl
Merle Haggard - If We Make it Through December

6. Come on baby don't you be so shy
You know that I love you let me tell you why
You got a heart I know that it's true
I couldn't love you any more than I do
Brenda Lee - Dum Dum
A real stumper. Not that I'm surprised, though.

7. Hatty told Matty
"Let's don't take no chance
Let's not be L-seven
Come and learn to dance"
Sam the Sham & The Pharaohs - Wooly Bully

8. I'd be happy just to hear your voice
Saying this is for the girl who didn't sign her name
Yes, she needs a dedication just the same
Charlie Dore - Pilot of the Airwaves

9. Now I've drunk a lot of wine and I'm feeling fine
Got to race some cat to bed
Oh is there concrete all around
Or is it in my head?
Mott the Hoople - All the Young Dudes

10. A dragon lives forever, but not so little boys
Painted wings and giant rings make way for other toys
Peter, Paul, & Mary - Puff the Magic Dragon

Bonus: Identify today's Tangredi theme.
Harry Potter, a topic that my two oldest sons love.

Double Bonus: If you've figured out the theme, you should have five Tangredi-formed answers. (4 points each. SWAGs where you have at least one component will be accepted. Blanket WAGs will not.)
Take one word from each artist or title to form Harry Potter references:
1. HARRY Chapin + Daniel POWTER => HARRY POTTER
2. HERMAN's Hermits + La GRANGE => HERMIONE GRANGER
3. Merle HAGGARD => (Rubeus) HAGGRID
4. DUM Dum + Wooly BULLY + Charlie DORE => (Albus) DUMBLEDORE
5. Mott the HOOPLE + PUFF the Magic Dragon => (Helga) HUFFLEPUFF

Oh, well... since nobody figured it out, it's "no harm, no foul".

Final Bonus: In song #7, what did they mean by "L-seven"?
If you hold your hands out and extend thumbs and forefingers to make a square, it looks like your left hand is an L, and your right hand is a 7. Thus, "Don't be a square," much like today's kids put hold their fingers in the shape of an L on the forehead to indicate "Loser".
