RI? 2018 Russian Winter Olympic Team

The IOC has just barred the 2018 Russian Winter Olympic Team from the upcoming games in South Korea for systematic doping infractions. However, individual athletes and teams who were not involved in doping infractions can compete under the name "Olympic Athlete from Russia" or OAR. They will march in under the Olympic flag and, if they win any gold medals, the Olympic anthem will be played. The Russian Olympic Committee's entire membership has been suspended as well.

It's not clear how many Russian athletes will compete, since they will have to undergo strict anti-doping scrutiny before being allowed in, and Russia may boycott the games entirely.

Last week, Russian Olympic officials provoked the dispute by including the sports councils in Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk and Zaporizhzhia as its members.

Catch-up since the original post: ROC athletes competed in the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and Beijing Winter Olympics in 2022, without the Russian flag and anthem.

Once again, small-minded ROC leaders have failed their athletes.
