When I adopted my cat Lucy, I deliberately adopted her because she was black and I know that some consider black cats to be unlucky.
I didn't realize that black dogs are less likely to be adopted as well, it's called Black Dog syndrome.

This surprises me. When I originally went to the animal shelter, I had been attracted by the photo a big, black, curly-coated dog named Elsie. After being in the shelter for weeks, that dog went home with a new family about an hour earlier than I arrived. So, I thought I'd just take a look around, since I was there.... That's when I met Lizbit and her littermates, and promptly forgot about my previous sensible plan to find an adult dog.
The rest, as they say, is history -- or comedy.

How odd. Or something. I find I'm attracted to black dogs and cats...probably because I have a black dog and until January, a black cat. I like the richness and sleekness of their look. There's something substantial about them.
With that being said, I didn't go to the Humane Society to find a kitteh with a particular color in mind. I just looked for that telepathic something. One of the friendliest cats was a black female. But Merv the tiger captured my innards.
If we should ever have to replace a certain pup-lalalalalalala I can't hear you-I would be open to any of the Lab colors.

This was on radio news too. Said that one shelter had to put down dozens of big black dogs a year, probably all of them with hearts of gold.
That's not the case around here, people pay $100 a puppy for a purebred black lab because they're such good family pets. However, at the shelter, it's always full of big mixes -- German Shepherd, Rottweiler, Husky, Greyhound, you name it, just about. Little doggies like Casey are adopted out right away.
