RIP Dad
Those who check in on my blog were aware that my Dad had not been doing well and had been in the hospital for three months now on and off a ventilator. The inability over that time to get any sustainable bounce back led to our decision this morning to have it shut off, and he passed away two hours ago. It's all sadness and no shock since given his poor health for the better part of the last 15 years, everyone from family to the litany of doctors he sees are stunned he made it this long. 62 years of age would not make him old to many of the people on this Bored, but reaching 60 was an accomplishment his father and sister never realized.
I realized while waiting out this ordeal today that while I had emotionally made peace with this inevitability for a while now, what teared me up was watching my Mom and sisters say goodbye to him and thinking of all the other people who I had seen him connect with. The workers at the restaurants we always had Thursday/Friday lunches at, as well as at the staff at the various doctors I was always the one to take him to appointments for. He was every bit the social extrovert that I am not....
I will miss him a lot, but I will hardly be alone....

I'm sorry to hear this, LB. I know this doesn't make up for your loss, but you've still got a lot of supportive family, both out there and here on the Bored.

I'm sorry for your loss. I hope there's a Golden Corral up there.

LB, you know how very sorry I am. I do appreciate you letting us know. I have been thinking about you since I found out about his serious condition. You have many memories with your dad. You were his only son, which gives you a very special place in his heart. Cherish those memories and try to have peace that he is no longer suffering.
We are all here for you.

Suitguy is not bitter.
feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive
The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

Re: RIP Dad
Doesn't matter how "ready" we think we are for the parting, we never fully are. It sucks, plain and simple.
So, rather than offer any more amateur philosophy, I'll just offer my condolences to you and your family, Bill. Plain and simple.
