Marley gets it!! I haven't confirmed that it's right, but I found some old document on the NPS website that listed presidents whose mothers were alive at inauguration and whose fathers were alive at inauguration, and only JFK matched, and he was never a living ex-President. John Adams died while his son was in office. As most trivia buffs know he died on July 4, 1826, the same day as his Vice President and successor, Thomas Jefferson, and 50 years to the day of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence that is so closely associated with both of them.

The printer put July 4, 1776 on the copies that were distributed and that is why we know have barbecues on July 4th rather than 2 days earlier.

Well, they voted for independence on July 2nd, with New York abstaining, and then they accepted the "Declaration of Independence" document on July 4th. Only John Hancock signed on the 4th. The other delegates started signing in August 1776.
