Lyrically Speaking - 1/25/17

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Wed Jan 25, 2017 7:45 am

In these lazier years of throwing together LSWE games, I've usually dedicated a game to songs that made it up to a certain number on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and this year I've decided to cut loose like a deuce and honor those songs that just missed out on that elusive #1 fame. The following songs all peaked at #2 on the US pop charts, and since I haven't offered a lot of chances at extra points beyond the standard 31 per game yet, I've thrown in a few more bonus songs for you all to miss!

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist....

1. The phone rings
In the middle of the night
My father yells what you
Gonna do with your life

2. Picket lines and picket signs
Don't punish me with brutality
Talk to me, so you can see

3. There's something inside that's making me crazy
I'll try to keep it together
'Cause what I say may not happen the same way
Now could be forever

4. Don't have to be so exciting
Just trying to give myself a little bit of fun, yeah
You always look so inviting
You ain't as green as you are young

5. Beneath your perfume and make-up
You're just a baby in disguise
And though you know that it's wrong to be alone with me
That come on look is in your eyes

6. I like smoke and lightning
Heavy metal thunder
Racin’ with the wind
And the feelin' that I’m under

7. I was born the
Son of a lawless man
Always spoke my mind
With a gun in my hand

8. We sailed on together
We drifted apart
And here you are by my side

9. This city desert makes you feel so cold
It's got so many people but it's got no soul

10. Cause I've been acting like sour milk all on the floor
It's your fault you didn't shut the refrigerator
Maybe that's the reason I've been acting so cold?

11. There's little things you hide
And little things that you show
Sometimes you think you're gonna get it
But you don't and that's just the way it goes

12. Deep in the world tonight
Our hearts beat safe and sound
I'll hold you so close (so close)
Just let yourself go down.

13. I buy you champagne and roses
And diamonds on your finger (Diamonds on your finger)
Still you hang out all night
What am I to do?

14. I'm blowing the day
To take a walk in the sun
And fall on my face in
Somebody's new mowed lawn

15. Got a job, that's O.K.
But they've got me workin' night and day
Punchin' in, punchin' out
Is this really what life's all about?

Kroxquo Bonus: It wouldn't really be fair to ask for you to come up with another song that only reached #2 on the charts, so tell me the title and artist of your second favorite song.

Image Bonus: Show me something that's only good enough for second place...

Boy that's tough. It depends on my mood and what I've heard recently. Since I just heard it this morning I'll go with one that I just heard this morning and would definitely rank high on my list. I'll Be There - Four Tops

Even though I know that Waiting for a Girl Like You/Foreigner was #2 for a very long time without making it to #1, my second favorite song is probably The Rainbow Connection/Kermit the Frog.

Once again, one spot out of perfection.
1. Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, Cyndi Lauper
2. What's Going On, Marvin Gaye
3. Love Is Alive, Gary Wright
4. Hurts So Good, John Mellencamp
5. nope
6. Born to Be Wild, Steppenwolf
7. Ride Like the Wind, Christopher Cross
8. Open Arms, Journey
9. Baker Street, Gerry Rafferty
10. Sweet Escape, Gwen Stefani
11. I Want Your Sex, George Michael
12. Everybody Have Fun Tonight, Wang Chung
13. Party All the Time, Eddie Murphy... this was definitely a piece of #2
14. Daydream, the Lovin' Spoonful
15. C'est La Vie, Robbie Nevil
Kroxquo Bonus: I would rather name another song that peaked at #2 because I'm an expert on those... so I have to come up with one that I would rank as one of my all-time favorite songs. I choose More Than I Can Say by Leo Sayer.
Image Bonus: Being an honest woman only got you second place in 2016, but I'll divert from the political commentary this time. So here's something else that was only good for second place in 2016:

I have no clue what I'm messing up on, but I left the first post as is with the exception of this edit notice. The full submission follows..which, sadly, isn't much different from this one but for one answer and the two bonus spots.

Gave up trying to come up with silly answers since (1) I missed too many on this one and (2) I have a toothache that is leaving me in even worse humor than usual (maybe a sympathy JJC point? :( )

Kroxquo Bonus: It wouldn't really be fair to ask for you to come up with another song that only reached #2 on the charts, so tell me the title and artist of your second favorite song.

As recently revealed on the All-Time Boneys list, Strawberry Fields Forever-Beatles.

Although I could've come up with several #2's, including one of the FIVE singles by CCR that peaked at #2..last I knew, they still held the record for most #2's without ever hitting #1..Or how about Blood, Sweat & Tears, who peaked at #2 with all 3 of their singles from the Blood, Sweat & Tears album? Maybe Those Were The Days by Mary Hopkin, which would've been #1 had it not been kept out of the top spot for three weeks by her label mate's record...an upstart little band called The Beatles (Hey Jude).

Too many second favorites to name, but I do know this little nugget of Billboard trivia: the song that spent the most weeks at #2 without reaching #1 was Foreigner's "Waiting for a Girl Like You."

3. There's something inside that's making me crazy
I'll try to keep it together
'Cause what I say may not happen the same way
Now could be forever

4. Don't have to be so exciting
Just trying to give myself a little bit of fun, yeah
You always look so inviting
You ain't as green as you are young

Hurts so good, John Cougar Mellencamp

5. Beneath your perfume and make-up
You're just a baby in disguise
And though you know that it's wrong to be alone with me
That come on look is in your eyes

Young Girl, Gary Puckett and the Union Gap. Where do you get this stuff? You weren't born when this song was popular.

6. I like smoke and lightning
Heavy metal thunder
Racin’ with the wind
And the feelin' that I’m under

Born to be wiiiiiiiiiild, Steppenwolf. See #5 comment. Maybe I should quit complaining. I may be able to get a few songs popular in the late 1960s.

Extra question: Did the same song keep these two outta #1? Nevermind, they may not even have been the same year.

7. I was born the
Son of a lawless man
Always spoke my mind
With a gun in my hand

8. We sailed on together
We drifted apart
And here you are by my side

9. This city desert makes you feel so cold
It's got so many people but it's got no soul

Baker Street, Gerry Rafferty. One of my favorite songs, and I thought it peaked at #20 or something.

10. Cause I've been acting like sour milk all on the floor
It's your fault you didn't shut the refrigerator
Maybe that's the reason I've been acting so cold?

11. There's little things you hide
And little things that you show
Sometimes you think you're gonna get it
But you don't and that's just the way it goes

12. Deep in the world tonight
Our hearts beat safe and sound
I'll hold you so close (so close)
Just let yourself go down.

13. I buy you champagne and roses
And diamonds on your finger (Diamonds on your finger)
Still you hang out all night
What am I to do?

14. I'm blowing the day
To take a walk in the sun
And fall on my face in
Somebody's new mowed lawn

What a day for a daydream, Lovin Spoonful

Oh good grief. It's Wednesday, I'll declare my second favorite song to be Folsom Prison Blues, Johnny Cash.

In these lazier years of throwing together LSWE games, I've usually dedicated a game to songs that made it up to a certain number on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and this year I've decided to cut loose like a deuce and honor those songs that just missed out on that elusive #1 fame. 1. The phone rings
In the middle of the night
My father yells what you
Gonna do with your life
Girls Just Want To Have Fun - Cyndi Lauper (This seems to be the seminal Annie Bonus song that reminds the player to pick up their extra point...)

2. Picket lines and picket signs
Don't punish me with brutality
Talk to me, so you can see
What's Going On - Marvin Gaye

3. There's something inside that's making me crazy
I'll try to keep it together

Now could be forever
Love Is Alive - Gary Wright (Oddly enough, I listed Joan Osborne's cover of this song as my second favorite cover song of all time in my blog countdown two years ago...)

4. Don't have to be so exciting
Just trying to give myself a little bit of fun, yeah
You always look so inviting
You ain't as green as you are young
Hurt So Good - John Cougar Mellencamp (I will not explain my universal JCM usage again, I think I do it every LSWE contest...)

5. Beneath your perfume and make-up
You're just a baby in disguise
And though you know that it's wrong to be alone with me
That come on look is in your eyes
Young Girl - Gary Puckett & The Union Gap (It only took four songs for some people to forget all about that Annie Bonus...)

6. I like smoke and lightning
Heavy metal thunder
Racin’ with the wind
And the feelin' that I’m under
Born To Be Wild - Steppenwolf

7. I was born the
Son of a lawless man

8. We sailed on together

And here you are by my side
Open Arms - Journey

Maybe that's the reason I've been acting so cold?

Everybody Have Fun Tonight - Wang Chung

13. I buy you champagne and roses
And diamonds on your finger (Diamonds on your finger)
Still you hang out all night
What am I to do?
Party All the Time - Eddie Murphy (I can't be the only person to like this song, can I?)

14. I'm blowing the day
To take a walk in the sun
And fall on my face in
Somebody's new mowed lawn
Daydream - The Lovin' Spoonful

15. Got a job, that's O.K.

Punchin' in, punchin' out
Is this really what life's all about?
C'est la Vie - Robbie Nevil

TBone went for my sentimental side with Shemp, as I'm one of those rare people who consider the forgotten Howard brother to be my favorite Stooge... but nobody captured the disappointment of being #2 better than melly did. I have no idea who that is with the silver medal, but the expression is perfect! That bitter runner up face gets melly the IBB!

JJC Points:

Weasel gets 3 JJC points for wide left...

vandal gets a JJC point for showing everyone involved with Queen except Adam Lambert...

frank gets 2 JJC points for the second city and for Gary Puckett's broken record...

TBone gets a supermax for screwing up again, the #2 trivia, having as toothache (I can sympathize), and of course for Shemp...

jarnon gets a JJC point for only knowing the two Squirrel songs...

Sprots gets a JJC point for the Soviets, who I believe finished third...

elwood gets 2 JJC points for Zimmerman and for foreshadowing today's game...

Saucy gets 2 JJC points for Justin Timberlake and some pervy guy (Not one in the same, I'd assume...)

melly gets 3 JJC points for Little Miss Runner Up...

Esto gets 2 JJC points for going number two on his #2...

Wow, I wasn't even thinking of Chicago as the Second City. I was thinking of the revival of Chicago being the second longest running Broadway show of all time!

I was wondering if there was a connection I was unaware of since I know diddly squat about Broadway, but left it alone once I came up with a good enough justification for the theme...

I don't normally make post-mortem replies in LS, but this is a good time for me to make one. Given the theme of this day's game, here's a special treat for everybody: 25 years of #2 hits. Five videos that play snippets of every song from January 1980-December 2004, in chronological order, that peaked at #2. See how many of these songs you remember.

"[Drumpf's] name alone creates division and anger, whose words inspire dissension and hatred, and can't possibly 'Make America Great Again.'" --Kobe Bryant (1978-2020)

"In times of crisis, the wise build bridges. The foolish build barriers." --Chadwick Boseman (1976-2020)
