Interesting Train Ride

Last night, my brother took the Amtrak train up to Washington DC to meet up with his sons and go to the Georgia Tech-Virginia basketball game this Saturday (both his sons went or are going to Virginia). Not surprisingly, the train was packed, albeit not with fellow hoops fans. Instead, everyone was either going to the inauguration or one of the protests and many of them were dressed for the particular occasion.

My brother made a lengthy post on Facebook last night about this (the train was delayed for several hours). Apparently, everyone on both sides of the political fence got along real well on the trip and the only grumbling was about Amtrak's less than punctual performance.

This moment is your moment: it belongs to you. It belongs to everyone gathered here today and everyone watching all across America. This is your day. This is your celebration.

It was a celebration without that many celebrants. But I'm sure those upcoming May Day military parades up Pennsylvania Avenue are going to draw the crowds like crazy. Nothing like seeing tanks and goose stepping troops headed straight for the nation's capital to rev up the old patriotic spirit.

Fun to compare with what we used to be able to do. It took, what?, maybe 2 or 3 years to build the Transcontinental railroad. Now, our sclerotic society takes decades to build a short stretch of railroad.

Fun to compare with what we used to be able to do. It took, what?, maybe 2 or 3 years to build the Transcontinental railroad. Now, our sclerotic society takes decades to build a short stretch of railroad.

It took over six years to construct the Transcontinental Railroad but it took ten years before that of preliminaries (surveying, etc.).
