I'm sure I have missed the point, but why would anyone reward such a headline with a click when it is known to be false? If we stop clicking on it, they will stop making it.

Because (a) they see it on the Internet and (b) it comports with what they think the truth is or what they would like the truth to be.

This entire phenomenon was rather eerily predicted by George Orwell in 1984 where Winston Smith worked for an agency that went back and scoured the historical records so that they agreed with the country's current political stance. If Eurasia was the enemy, then newspaper articles and history books were changed to reflect the horrible things that Eurasia had "always" done over the years. Then, when Eastasia became the enemy, they changed the books again.

Technology makes this a whole lot easier today. Just post an article online that appears authentic and it becomes the truth. It's a phenomenon known as confirmation bias. We look for "facts" that confirm what we believe and ignore others:

But surely once we are aware of this and have learned to think for ourselves, this bias goes away.

Confirmation bias has been a thing for a long time, but I'm still waiting for many people to learn to think for themselves. --Bob
