The Boney 500: Album #3

3. A TRICK OF THE TAIL-GENESIS (1976)

This was the first album in which Phil Collins took over as lead vocalist from the departed Peter Gabriel. It was a fairly smooth
transition in two ways. First of all, Collins' voice, at least to begin with, was remarkably similar to Gabriel's, probably because
he hadn't yet fully developed his own style. Secondly, they struck a very good balance between the band's progressive beginnings and
the more pop direction they had begun moving toward. It was accessible but still intelligent music. "Dance With A Volcano", the opening
track, was progressive enough in nature to assure fans that this was, after all, still Genesis. The playful title track was a hint of
what would come down the road later yet still carried a whiff of Gabriel's more whimsical moments. Many standouts, but my favorite is
easily the stunningly beautiful "Ripples".

Just 2 more to go!!!

Woo Hoo! I'm guaranteed to be in the top 2!

It's only a matter of deciding which of my fine albums will make the cut:

Tough choice, T-bone. But no matter how you skin it, I'm a winner, baby!

Kill it and grill it!
Got you in a stranglehold, baby.

I still wish Collins hadn't left Genesis. I think both suffered.

-- America would be a better place if leaders would do more long-term thinking. -- Wilma Mankiller
