One of the founding fathers of progressive rock, the British musician is known for songs including In the Court of the Crimson King and 21st Century Schizoid Man.
He died on Tuesday after "a long and stubborn battle with cancer", said his manager.
The news comes nine months after Lake's band-mate Keith Emerson died.
Keyboardist Emerson died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, coroners in the US said.

Life and coincidences are too weird......
I drive a Tesla. Tesla's have a large screen which contain all of the controls for the car. In addition, there is a web browser as part of its offerings. Another part of having a Tesla is it contains Slacker Radio. (I really love Slacker) Anyway, currently I have "Rick Wakeman: The Ultimate Experience" as my preferred "radio station". Slacker is like Pandora, in which you put in a song and it not only plays that song, but it also picks songs that it feels are similar. Anywho, I opened the door to get in and "In the Court of the Crimson King" was playing. Because I had started the "IT'S COLLEGE BOWL MANIA TIME" thread, the Bored was loaded on the car's screen. I have no idea why, but my eyes were immediately steered to this thread. I got goose bumps all over.
Greg Lake was an incredible musician. King Crimson (in his time), ELP, Asia..... some of my favorite music of all time.
As great of a musician he was, he was..... well, not such a nice guy. Had an ego that couldn't be matched. The stories are endless.
Greg Lake gone. Keith Emerson gone. Chris Squire gone. These guys (and many, many more) shaped the music that not only shaped me in my youth, but is still a large part of my life.
Rest In Peace. I'll be thinking of you often.
