To steal a line from Uly

#1 Post by gotribego26 » Thu Apr 03, 2008 7:41 pm

this morning I learned a bit about the Usefulness of Useless Information - my local sports talk radio station runs a weekly contest for a $100 gift certificate to a local Steak House.

They ask a sports trivia question, play a movie clip and ask you to identify the Movie and actor and then a second trivia question.

The sports trivia follows current sports events.

Today's question one was - Who holds the records for the most rebounds
in a NCAA Championship game?
Spoiler
Bill Russell
Usually movie clips are my downfall - but today they played a NIcholson clip - he was the easy part - now I needed to place the movie. Then I heard this line "Well, that just happens to be exactly what I'm looking for. I'm outlining a new writing project and, uh, five months of peace is just what I want." That gave me enough
Spoiler
"The Shining"
The final question was truly a lay-up - name the only player to be named Most Outstadning Player in the final four three times.

Spoiler
Lew Alcindor
We've got a couple of birthdays later this month - someone is having steak for their birthday.

Information is not useless if it gets you dinner......last night I knew that Austin is the southern most state capital in the lower 48. It was worth second place and $25. Not quite a steak dinner.....

Same question got one contestant 32 grand during PT WWTBAM. IIRC it was one of the infamous contestants who spent a long time on a $500K question and went back to 32K.

While I certainly know what they meant, the phrase "lower 48" is really quite the misnomer. Using the convention that south is down or "lower" then the entire state of Hawaii is lower than any point in the "lower 48".

Would seem more appropriate to say the contiguous or coterminous/conterminous 48 states or some other more appropriate term.

How about calling it "The Middle 48?"

To be honest, the triviameister did add, "excluding Alaska and Hawai'i" to make sure no one was confused.

Congratulations to those sploofus players, weyoun, cal, tennis dude and the confessor on their success so far this month. I was #10 this morning but have been passed by all the faster players as they answered. I'm usually slow but was especially slow on a latin translation on today's question. Good luck the rest of the month.

My question this morning was about the definition of a narcissist. That reinforced my suspicion that they customize each question to the participant. Sending a Latino a question about Latin pretty much confirms it.

How about the eastern 48?

A little more dicey there. Since the Aleutian Island chain extends well into the Eastern hemisphere theoretically by convention one could say that Alaska is both farther west and farther east than the "middle 48". Of course the International Dateline conveniently zig zags around the tip of the islands (and the tip of Russia which extends into the Western hemisphere).

I must correct myself. The entire 1500 mile stretch of the Hawaiian archipelago, with the exception of Midway Island, which is an unincorporated territory of the US, makes up the state of Hawaii (something I knew but managed to initially overlook). Kure Atoll, the northernmost (and westernmost) of the island chain is about 4 degrees further north than Key West so "the entire state" of Hawaii is not lower than the entire "middle 48".

I just saw that psm is playing too. What is your handle? I just started paying attention to the leaderboard last month. I think I ended up in the top 100 but as someone pointed out, there's no record of the results from the last few months. Anyway, I'm just the plodding type, hoping to get as many right as possible to get to the top 100 later in the month. And good luck to any bb's who are playing under assumed names. I think I might see tmitsss later in the month.

I just started playing around the 20th of the March. I am ranked in the 200s this month because I missed a religion related Geography question.

I think that I am using my email account name. This is the only place that I use the handle PSM. (I used that name sarcastically when I signed up for the bored and had no idea how long I would be using it. When I spoke with Jen before I went on the show and she type me that people who go on the show are "typed" and I was a "Soccer Mom." Since I felt that there was much more to me that just being a mother who transports my kids from place to place in an SUV, I didn't appreciate the epithet.)

When you make the hot 100 be sure and let us know. I answer the questions as soon as I get the email, usually about 11pm PDT. So far I've gotten each one correct and when I answer at 11 I get to be in the top 10 but then as others wake up and answer quicker than I have, I get pushed down the board. I'm #88 right now. But the race does not always go to the swift......

I was #124 when I answered this morning. Probably about the best I can hope for.

This game has me wondering......how many different questions do they ask each day? I wonder if people sign up with several different accounts, see the questions during the day and then use their main account to answer a question they have already seen. This is just speculation. I know that I am slow and I am taking extra care to answer correctly since I missed at least two questions last month rushing to answer.
