News I've gotta share..

#1 Post by T_Bone0806 » Sun Aug 07, 2016 12:46 pm

Followers of the yearly Boney Awards may recognize the name Michael Carpenter, as his music often pops up on those lists, including the most recent ones. He's an Australian artist/producer who has been making some great music for years, unfortunately to little attention. Anyway, he is easing up on the artist side to concentrate on the producing end of things. He announced a trio of projects to wrap things up..one last power pop record, one last alternative country record with his band The Cuban Heels, and another in his series of cover tunes, "S.O.O.P. (Songs of Other People) #6". He financed it through a crowdfunding project. The first two have been released, and those of us who contributed to the funding just got an advance download of the covers album. It will be available for download on Bandcamp and iTunes in a couple of months.

Now here's the fun part:

I have corresponded with Michael through e-mail and Facebook for a while now, and he knows some of my background. As such, he asked if I'd like to try singing some background vocals. Truthfully, I really have no voice left..my illness a couple of years ago, coupled with the slowly advancing Dystrophy, have taken away what were marginal talents to start with. But I figured I'd give it a shot, as the parts didn't require a lot of strength to pull off. So, through the magic of the internets (and the help of my son's computer knowledge}, I warbled out a few parts and sent them off. Michael mixed them in with parts he had already done, and the result is more than anything I could've expected.

The song is an obscure 60's oldie called "I've Got No More To Say" by the Thomas Group (the drummer was Danny Thomas' son). It was something I knew would be perfect for him, and he didn't disappoint.

So, in a couple of months, I am actually going to be on a track available to purchase for download! I never would've seen THAT coming.

And Michael has been hinting he may not have gotten it all out of his system, as he is already thinking about a "S.O.O.P. #7". If that happens, I may have even bigger news. Stay tuned...

Mr. Bone, I am so excited! Me and BeBe found the song on a youtube, and we like it, even though we don't know the two-footers singing it. It sounds a little bit Beatle-ly to me. Imagine how much we'll love it when one of our very best friens is singing it!

I've never bought a music before, but I'm sure we can figure it out when the time comes. I can't wait!

Awesome news, Mr. Bone! I've got S.O.O.P. 1 through 5, so now I've got an extra reason to get #6.

You are quite musically astute, Lizbit! Indeed there is much Beatleness in the original tune. Good observation!

I am only singing backup on the song, but it is still a way beyond cool thing to me. Unfortunately, I don't have anything approaching a lead vocal voice anymore. I currently make Bob Dylan sound like Caruso...

UPDATE: This has been released for download on the Bandcamp site. Not yet on iTunes, but I believe it will be fairly soon (I think). The track I'm on is track 4, but he does some good work throughout. He's got a lot of music there (and iTunes) for that matter. No plans for a physical cd release at this time, download only. He sent me an advance download a couple of months ago with pdf files of the artwork, where my name is in the credits, so I could build my own cd case. Not sure if those files come with the download or not. At any rate, the Bandcamp site lets you listen to the entire tracks, which is a feature I like since you can't always get an idea of whether you like the song in a 30-second snippet. If you got 'em, strap on some headphones so you can get a better listen to what's being done with the harmonies.

Messaged Michael last night (well, this morning HIS time I guess)..the album won't be on iTunes for a few months for anyone interested. Only place it's available right now is Bandcamp. And for the sake of clarity, I am not hawking it for financial purposes for myself..the only "rewards" I got were the absolute blast I had doing this and the thrill of knowing that something I contributed to musically is out there in the world...and it's not like Carpenter himself is making a mint on this..he wouldn't have crowdfunded the projects if he was raking in the dough. Anyway, to be honest, you can listen to the whole thing without financial commitment anyway...I'm just presenting all the facts (dare I say, I report, you decide??)..but his WHOLE catalog is worth checking out too.

Does that mean Kanye will interupt Taylor Swift at the next awards show to tell everyone that T-Bone deserved the award?

I also have to examine the ethics of awarding a Boney to a project one was a part of. I mean, I loved the job he did on it, but...

Can one give a Boney to himself??
