Game #163: American Music

Identify the 120 songs in the clues below. (Most are from the pop charts, but we make several excursions elsewhere, including one visit to church and another to my alma mater.) Then, match them into 30 pairs and 20 trios according to a Tangredi, or principle you must discover for yourself. No song will be used twice.

Yes, it is that simple.

1. Well, the rock still rolls,
The beat goes on
After all of this time,
The faces change but the song's the same,
So roll over, Mister Dylan, for the next in line.

2. I thought I was in love a couple of times before with the girl next door,
But that was long before I met you,
Now I'm sure that I won't forget you.

3. But if you love him, you'll forgive him
Even though he's hard to understand,
And if you love him, oh, be proud of him,
'Cause after all, he's just a man.

4. Ours, a love I held tightly
Feeling the rapture grow
Like a flame burning brightly,
But when she left, gone was the glow….

5. What have I become?
My sweetest friend,
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end.

6. Tonight it's very clear,
'Cause we're both lying here,
There's so many things I wanna say.
I will always love you,
I would never leave you alone.

7. Our love was born with our first embrace
And a page was torn out of time and space.

8. This love is a blaze,
I saw flames from the side of the stage
And the fire brigade comes in a couple of days.

9. We like our fun and we never fight.
You can't dance and stay uptight.

10. I'm gonna love you
Till the heavens stop the rain,
I'm gonna love you
Till the stars fall from the sky for you and I.

11. There's evil in the air and there's thunder in the sky,
And a killer's on the bloodshot streets,
And down in the tunnels where the deadly are rising
Oh, I swear I saw a young boy down in the gutter,
He was starting to foam in the heat.

12. Once upon a time
That little girl was mine.
If I'd been true
I know she'd never be with you.

13. So tonight
Gotta leave that nine to five upon the shelf
And just enjoy yourself.

14. Moonlight in the city brings the magic to your eyes,
Freezin' a moment, leave me paralyzed,
Breathe an emotion, set it dancin' in my ear,
Bring on the rhythm when I hold you near.

15. Yes, the strong get smart
While the weak ones fade,
Empty pockets don't ever make the grade.

16. Had a rusty hot rod
On a country road
And a John Deere tractor
With a radio,
Just a long haired farmboy
With jukebox dreams.
Hit the town on weekends
Just to blow off some steam.
(You know what I mean.)

17. Like a rose under the April snow,
I was always certain love would grow.

18. Don't count stars or you might stumble.
Someone drops a sigh and down you'll tumble.

19. It's funny, honey, you don't care,
You never listen to my prayer.

20. Baby Huey,
Tonight it's gonna be some changes,
No acting sadly,
So stop acting and get it clapping
'Cause I'm knowing you feeling me.

21. I didn't come here for cryin',
Didn't come here to break down,
It's just a dream of mine is coming to an end.
And how can I blame you
When I build my world around
The hope that one day we'd be so much more than friends?

22. The trust and self-assurance that lead to happiness,
They're the very things we kill, I guess.

23. Heard the singers playin', how we cheered for more.
The crowd had rushed together tryin' to keep warm.

24. If you received my letter telling you I'd soon be free,
Then you'll know just what to do if you still want me,
If you still want me.

25. You better stop the things that you do.
I ain't lyin', no, I ain't lyin'.
I just can't stand it, babe,
The way you're always runnin' 'round,
I just can't stand it, the way you always put me down.

26. Always I can’t refuse ’em,
Always my feet pursues ’em,
Long as they’ve got a bosom
I woos ’em.

27. I'm not a woman,
I'm not a man,
I am something that you'll never understand.

28. This is a public service announcement,
This is only a test,
Emergency evacuation protest
May impair your ability to operate machinery.
Can't quite tell just what it means to me,
Keep out of reach of children,
Don't you talk to strangers,
Get your philosophy from a bumper sticker.

29. They say that time takes its toll on a body,
Makes the young girls brown hair turn grey,
But honey, I don't care, I ain't in love with your hair
And if it all fell out, well, I'd love you anyway.

30. We are amazed but not amused
By all the things you say that you'll do,
Though much concerned but not involved
With decisions that are made by you.

31. She helped me with my suitcase,
She stands before my eyes
Driving me to the airport
And to the friendly skies.

32. She'll expose you
When she snows you
Off your feet with the crumbs she throws you.

33. Anyone who ever loved
Could look at me
And know that I love you.
Anyone who ever dreamed
Could look at me
And know I dream of you.

34. You know I don't come from no black lagoon.
I'm from past the stars and beyond the moon.
You can keep the Thing,
Keep the It,
Keep the Creature, they don't mean sh*t!

35. Now I'm seventeen, still alone
Wondering if I should go home
Or maybe stay out on my own.

36. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose,
And sometimes the blues just get ahold of you.

37. And she drops what she's doin' and she hurries down to meet me
And I'm always late,
But she sits waitin' patiently and smiles when she first sees me
'Cause she's made that way.

38. 'Cause the free wind is blowin' through your hair
And the days surround your daylight there,
Seasons crying no despair,
Alligator lizards in the air, in the air.

39. You want me to leave, you want me to stay,
You ask me to come back, you turn and walk away,
You want to be lovers, and you want to be friends,
I'm losing my patience, you're nearing the end.

40. Woke up to the sound of pouring rain,
The wind would whisper and I'd think of you
And all the tears you cried, that called my name
And when you needed me I came through.

41. I've been tryin’ for hour just to think of what exactly to say.
I thought I’d leave you with a letter or a fiery speech
Like when an actor makes an exit at the end of a play
And I've been dying for hours trying to fill up all the holes with some sense.

42. Your name and mine inside a heart on a wall
Still finds a way to haunt me, though they're so small.

43. And even though I know how very far apart we are,
It helps to think we might be wishing on the same bright star,
And when the night wind starts to sing a lonesome lullaby,
It helps to think we're sleeping underneath the same big sky.

44. Once I was a king,
I thought always a king
'Cause I just captured someone's heart,
But may I explain I treated her mean
And then my kingdom fell apart.

45. I wanna know if she loved me.
Did she really love me?
Was she just playing me for a fool?

46. (Silly girl.)
Shame on you, your mama said.
(Silly girl.)
Shame on you, you're cryin' in bed.

47. What makes you think love will end
When you know that my whole life depends on you?

48. My love, tell me what it's all about.
You've got something that I can't live without.
Happiness is so hard to find.
Hey baby, tell me what is on your mind.

49. It's perfect outside, it's like God let me dial up the weather.
Got the whole crew here, I ain't seen some of them in forever.
It's one of those never forget it, better stop and take it in kinda scenes.
Everything's just right yeah except for one thing.

50. I'm gonna learn to read and write,
I'm gonna see what there is to see,
So if you go from nowhere on the road to somewhere
And you meet anyone, you know it's me.

51. I was lost, I was lost,
Crossed lines I shouldn't have crossed,
I was lost, oh yeah.

52. When the bells ring and tell the world I'm taking your hand,
Folks from all over will come to see the wedding we've planned.

53. I am a sniper,
Always hit the mark,
Paid assassin
Working after dark,
Looking through the night,
Using infra-red,
My target on you
Aimed at your head.

54. Though we had our fling,
I just never would suspect a thing
'Til that little bell began to ring in my head,
In my head.
But I tried to run,
Though I knew it wouldn't help me none
'Cause I couldn't ever love no one, or so I said.

55. I don't mind Sunday night at all,
'Cause that's the night friends come to call,
And Monday to Fridays go fast
And another week is past

56. La la la la la dee oh,
Whether the weather be rain or snow,
Pretending can make it real,
A snowy pasture, a green and grassy field.

57. Gonna tell Aunt Mary 'bout Uncle John,
He claim he has the misery but he's havin' a lot of fun.

58. Baby, I think tonight
We can take what was wrong and make it right.

59. The night you died, I cut it off,
I really don’t know why,
For now each time I kiss it
I get bloodstains on my tie.

60. Give me a lifetime of promises and a world of dreams,
Speak the language of love like you know what it means.

61. I had skin like leather and the diamond-hard look of a cobra,
I was born blue and weathered but I burst just like a supernova,
I could walk like Brando right into the sun, then dance just like a Casanova.

62. I don't wanna say it,
I don't wanna find another way
To make it through the day without you.

63. Remember that special night
When all of the stars were shining bright?
We made our first endeavor to stay together,
We made our very first promise
To love, to share, and be real honest,
But on that very first night
It wasn't quite right.

64. I heard the warning voice from friends and my relations,
They tell me all about your heartbreak reputation.

65. Been running so fast
Right from the starting line,
No more connections,
I don't need any more advice.

66. Something about her was familiar,
I could swear I'd seen her face before,
But she said, "I'm sure you're mistaken,"
And she didn't say anything more.

67. The love we shared for oh so long is such a big part of me.
If you must take your love away, take it gradually.

68. I need a photo opportunity,
I want a shot at redemption,
Don't want to end up a cartoon
In a cartoon graveyard.

69. We had a once in a lifetime,
But I just didn't know it
'Til my life fell apart.

70. Stuck at a red light outside an adult bookstore,
His son said, “Daddy, what are all those X's for?”
As the light turned green, he changed the subject fast,
Started talking about football as they drove right past.

71. Just let it die
With no goodbyes.
Details don't matter,
We both paid the price.
Tears in my eyes,
You know sometimes
It'd be like that, baby.

72. Far above the busy humming
Of the bustling town,
Reared against the arch of heaven
Looks she proudly down.

73. Doctor and a lawyer and an Indian chief,
They all dig that crazy beat.

74. When she says she loves me,
Well, you got your reasons
And you got your lies
And you got your manipulations.

75. A thousand other boys could never reach you.
How could I have been the one?
I saw the world spin beneath you
And scatter like ice from the spoon
That was your womb.

76. Well, my buddy Jim Bass, he's a-workin' pumpin gas
And he makes two fifty for an hour.
He's got rhythm in his hands as he's tappin' on the cans,
Sings rock and roll in the shower.

77. I was living like half a man,
Then I couldn't love but now I can.
You pick me up when I'm feeling sad,
More soul than I ever had.

78. Showers,
Your love comes in showers
And every hour on the hour
You let me feel your loving power.

79. Over the highway and over the street
Carpets of clover I'll lay at your feet.

80. Lord, I was stung, shoulda' seen it come a long time ago,
When I realized the reality gave me a role.
If things are the same, then explain why your kiss is so cold
And that mist in your eyes feels like rain on the fire in my soul.

81. Segregation, determination, demonstration, integration,
Aggravation, humiliation, obligation to our nation.

82. You know I love the ladies,
Love to have my fun,
I'm a high night flier and a rainbow rider,
A straight-shootin' son of a gun,
I said a straight shootin' son of a gun.

83. Could I live through the pain on a terrace in Spain?
Would it pass?
It would pass.
Could I bury my rage with a boy half your age
In the grass?
Bet your ass!

84. Some men follow rainbows I am told,
Some men search for silver, some for gold.

85. I try to shut eyes, but I can't get her outta my sight.
I know I'm gonna know her, but I gotta get over my fright.
We'll, I'm just gonna walk up to her,
I'm gonna talk to her tonight.

86. I'll never forget the moment
We kissed the night of the hayride,
The way that we hugged to try to keep warm
While taking a sleigh ride.

87. I ain't got a fever, got a permanent disease
And it'll take more than a doctor to prescribe a remedy.
I got lots of money, but it isn't what I need.
Gonna take more than a shot to get this poison out of me.

88. Don't you buy no rye, don't you buy no rye,
'Cos if you buy me some rye, you gonna make me high.
If you make me high, you'll wanna loosen my tie.
Don't you buy no rye.

89. Like painted kites, those days and nights, they went flyin' by.
The world was new beneath a blue umbrella sky.

90. I count the falling tears,
They fall before my eyes.
Seems like a thousand years
Since we broke the ties.

91. As morning breaks
The heaven on high,
I lift my heavy load to the sky.
Sun comes down with a burning glow,
Mingles my sweat with the earth below.

92. You know I love you, baby,
Better than I do myself.
When I'm with you
I don't need nobody else.

Catch me getting in the mood.
Boy, I'll give you anything,
Cruising's all you have to do.

97. I'm a hustler baby (I'm a hustler)

To watch the kids dancin' 'cross the USA.

My baby drives me crazy when she does the stroll.

I didn't know I lost you till you're gone.

Johnny Cash and Johnny Rivers, can't stop now, I got the shivers

And nothing can keep him from me,
He is my destiny.

Don't you hold on to nothin' too long.
Just take what you need from the ladies, then leave them
With the words of a sad country song.

114. If you don't like rock 'n roll,
Think what you've been missin'.
But if you like to bop and strawl,
Come on down and listen.

115. A time to gain, a time to lose,
A time to rend, a time to sew,
A time for love, a time for hate,
A time for peace, I swear it's not too late!

116. Is everything alright?
I just called to say
How lost I feel without you.
Miles away, I really can't believe I'm near
And how I still care about you.

117. You know I don't understand why you don't treat yourself better,
Do the crazy things that you do,
When all the debutantes in Houston, baby,
Couldn't hold a candle to you.

118. The lights were burning low there in the parlor
When through the kitchen door up popped her father.
He said, "I saw you when you kissed my daughter.
Better wed her right now, or face a slaughter!"

119. My love is yours, baby,
Oh, right from the start.
You, you, you possess my soul now, honey,
And I know, I know you own my heart.

120. I could stay awake just to hear you breathing,
Watch you smile while you are sleeping,
While you're far away and dreaming.
I could spend my life in this sweet surrender,
I could stay lost in this moment forever,
Every moment spent with you is a moment I treasure.

A quick pass for this morning....

2. I thought I was in love a couple of times before with the girl next door,
But that was long before I met you,
Now I'm sure that I won't forget you.
Your Smiling Face - James Taylor

6. Tonight it's very clear,
'Cause we're both lying here,
There's so many things I wanna say.
I will always love you,
I would never leave you alone.
Glory of Love - Peter Cetera

9. We like our fun and we never fight.
You can't dance and stay uptight.
Dancing in the Moonlight - King Harvest (not King Crimson... an oft incorrect LS answer.)

10. I'm gonna love you
Till the heavens stop the rain,
I'm gonna love you
Till the stars fall from the sky for you and I.
Touch Me - Doors (Not 100% sure of the title here...)

12. Once upon a time
That little girl was mine.
If I'd been true
I know she'd never be with you.
Take Good Care Of My Baby - ???

23. Heard the singers playin', how we cheered for more.
The crowd had rushed together tryin' to keep warm.
Who'll Stop The Rain - CCR (Definitely CCR, but I'm having a hard time connecting it to the correct chorus....)

32. She'll expose you
When she snows you
Off your feet with the crumbs she throws you.
Bette Davis Eyes - Kim Carnes

38. 'Cause the free wind is blowin' through your hair
And the days surround your daylight there,
Seasons crying no despair,
Alligator lizards in the air, in the air.
Ventura Highway - America

43. And even though I know how very far apart we are,
It helps to think we might be wishing on the same bright star,

Ready for a consolidation?

Game #163: American Music

Identify the 120 songs in the clues below. (Most are from the pop charts, but we make several excursions elsewhere, including one visit to church and another to my alma mater.) Then, match them into 30 pairs and 20 trios according to a Tangredi, or principle you must discover for yourself. No song will be used twice.

Yes, it is that simple.

1. Well, the rock still rolls,
The beat goes on
After all of this time,
The faces change but the song's the same,
So roll over, Mister Dylan, for the next in line.

AMERICAN MUSIC, Bruce Springsteen

2. I thought I was in love a couple of times before with the girl next door,
But that was long before I met you,
Now I'm sure that I won't forget you.

YOUR SMILING FACE, James Taylor

3. But if you love him, you'll forgive him
Even though he's hard to understand,
And if you love him, oh, be proud of him,
'Cause after all, he's just a man.

4. Ours, a love I held tightly

'Cause we're both lying here,
There's so many things I wanna say.
I will always love you,
I would never leave you alone.

GLORY OF LOVE, Peter Cetera

7. Our love was born with our first embrace
And a page was torn out of time and space.

AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER, Vic Damone

8. This love is a blaze,
I saw flames from the side of the stage
And the fire brigade comes in a couple of days.

9. We like our fun and we never fight.
You can't dance and stay uptight.

DANCING IN THE MOONLIGHT, King Harvest

10. I'm gonna love you
Till the heavens stop the rain,
I'm gonna love you
Till the stars fall from the sky for you and I.

TOUCH ME, The Doors

11. There's evil in the air and there's thunder in the sky,
And a killer's on the bloodshot streets,
And down in the tunnels where the deadly are rising

He was starting to foam in the heat.

12. Once upon a time
That little girl was mine.

Gotta leave that nine to five upon the shelf
And just enjoy yourself.

Get your philosophy from a bumper sticker.

29. They say that time takes its toll on a body,

Adding info to the consolidation:

17. Like a rose under the April snow,
I was always certain love would grow.

EVERGREEN (LOVE THEME FROM "A STAR IS BORN"), Barbra Streisand

67. The love we shared for oh so long is such a big part of me.
If you must take your love away, take it gradually.

BREAK IT TO ME GENTLY, Juice Newton or Brenda Lee

69. We had a once in a lifetime,
But I just didn't know it
'Til my life fell apart.

IF EVER YOU'RE IN MY ARMS AGAIN, Peabo Bryson

81. Segregation, determination, demonstration, integration,
Aggravation, humiliation, obligation to our nation.

BALL OF CONFUSION (THAT'S WHAT THE WORLD IS TODAY), Temptations

I"m pretty sure that 101 is just All Hail the Power of Jesus' Name. Crown Him with Many Crowns is a different melody -- it's not like some of those hymns that share a melody. And I don't remember those words anywhere in "Crown."

22. The trust and self-assurance that lead to happiness,
They're the very things we kill, I guess.

THE HEART OF THE MATTER - Don Henley

48. My love, tell me what it's all about.
You've got something that I can't live without.
Happiness is so hard to find.

Coming back for some of the low hanging fruit...

4. Ours, a love I held tightly
Feeling the rapture grow
Like a flame burning brightly,
But when she left, gone was the glow….

BLUE VELVET, Bobby Vinton

14. Moonlight in the city brings the magic to your eyes,
Freezin' a moment, leave me paralyzed,
Breathe an emotion, set it dancin' in my ear,
Bring on the rhythm when I hold you near.

ROCK ME TONITE, Billy Squier

20. Baby Huey,
Tonight it's gonna be some changes,
No acting sadly,
So stop acting and get it clapping
'Cause I'm knowing you feeling me.

I should have gotten this one earlier off of the first two words... POP LOCK & DROP IT, Huey. Now my spidey senses are tingling on why Frank would put this one-hit wonder rap song in one of his games.

40. Woke up to the sound of pouring rain,
The wind would whisper and I'd think of you
And all the tears you cried, that called my name
And when you needed me I came through.

I REMEMBER YOU, Skid Row

58. Baby, I think tonight
We can take what was wrong and make it right.

BROKEN WINGS, Mr. Mister

62. I don't wanna say it,
I don't wanna find another way
To make it through the day without you.

JUST ANOTHER DAY, Jon Secada

75. A thousand other boys could never reach you.
How could I have been the one?
I saw the world spin beneath you
And scatter like ice from the spoon
That was your womb.

BLACK BALLOON, Goo Goo Dolls

102. I think it's true that we've all been through
Some nasty weather.
Let's understand that we're here
To handle things together.

GET ON YOUR FEET, Gloria Estefan

Something else that has my spidey senses tingling: The theme of this game is "American Music" and we're looking for a total of 50 matches. There's gotta be something related to the 50 states in this game.

Coming back for a couple of more big songs:

60. Give me a lifetime of promises and a world of dreams,
Speak the language of love like you know what it means.

THE BEST, Tina Turner

65. Been running so fast
Right from the starting line,
No more connections,
I don't need any more advice.

HEAD OVER HEELS, the Go-Go's

78. Showers,
Your love comes in showers
And every hour on the hour
You let me feel your loving power.

HEAVEN MUST BE MISSING AN ANGEL, Tavares

I'm seeing a lot of things from those oddball songs (like "Pop Lock & Drop It") that Frank selected, but nothing cohesive yet.

Seems like a hint may be required. Here are two:

(A) In terms of mechanics, this game resembles my 'We Are the World' game from last year.

(B) The title does mean something, but not what you think it means, and it may not help right now. You have to think outside the box.

At some point when I get time this week, I'm going to do another consolidation (unless someone beats me to it) to see if anything clicks. I think we're still missing quite a few of the songs, though.

If we get anywhere with this game, I should have some time later on this week to dedicate to working on it... but just wanted to drop a post now saying it hasn't been forgotten....

Likewise -- I am working on writing an annual report and a couple other projects. When I have the time, I don't have the concentration.

Two of the titles on here are incomplete in ways that will prove significant. Otherwise, everything on here that needs to be right is right.
